Lorelei Express in reverse?

We rode the "Lorelei Express" in 1973 and would like to do so (in reverse) from Venice down the Rhine, preferably in daytime. We need to end up in Calais as our ultimate destination is York in the UK.
How long can/will this trip take?
If overnight what accommodations are available?
About how much will such a trip cost per person?
I see that reservations might be wise & welcome details.
Speed is not a factor in this trip.
We are happy to be able to travel by train.
Many thanks for all help.

  • Unfortunately the Lorelei Express is no longer in service. Rail Travel is possible along the same route yet will require a few connections and you will want to stop for a day or two along the route.

In order to find the connections you can break up the journey into the following segments:
    Venice to Basel
Basel to Cologne (select a connection via Mannheim for the scenic route along the Rhine)
    Cologne to Paris
Paris to London (for high speed Eurostar) and then London to York.
Paris to Calais (for ferry across the channel) and then Dover to York.

Reservations will be required for most trains and will be included with the purchase of one-way tickets. If you plan to purchase a rail pass the seat reservations will be additional.

  • Thank you for your prompt reply. I think we'll follow the Rhine to Brussels & take Eurostar to London. Do we make each reservation when we first buy tickets or one by one as we travel? How does "ticket" differ from "reservation"? Are there timetables to know how long our trip will be and when the next Eurostar leaves Brussels? Is there a better way to plan this trip?
    Thanks for all help.

  • If you plan to purchase point to point tickets then the seat reservation will be included whenever possible. If you plan to purchase a rail pass then the seat reservation would additional. You can find fares and schedules by visiting the following link http://www.raileurope.com/us/rail/poi.... Please break up the journey into individual segments as previously outlined in order to obtain the most complete list of schedules. You may need to enter a date within the next 60 days for approximate fares and schedules. Some schedules are only available within 60 days of the travel date.
