Lugano to Pontresina

Hello,

i'll be traveling from Lugano to Pontresina and spending a night in Pontresina.
Will i be able to use the Bermina express for this? Will swiss pass cover the train cost?

I'll be staying in ibis budget Lugano Paradiso for Lugano and Schweizerhof Pontresina in Pontresina, are these two lodging inacessible?
I tried googling the directions for these two hotels and it seems like i will need to change at least 5 trains to arrive at my hotel.

Look forward to hear from you.

Thanks

    Hi Teo,

If your intended travel falls after April 14th, you would get from Lugano to Pontresina by taking the Bernina Express scenic route. This involves taking a bus from Lugano to Tirano, where you would switch to a train that would take you up to Pontresina.

Even though Tirano is in Italy, the Swiss Travel Pass covers ticket costs for this full route, including the bus from Lugano to Tirano. The bus and train would both just require reservations in addition to a rail pass. For travel with a rail pass, you would purchase reservations by clicking the 'Seat Reservations' tab on our homepage (www.raileurope.com), entering a route, and indicating the type of rail pass with which you'll be traveling (i.e. a 'Swiss Travel Pass'). For the Bernina Express route, you would just have to break up your search in Tirano. Also, when doing your search for the train segment, you may have to enter 'St Moritz' as the destination city. Therefore, you would do one search from 'Lugano' to 'Tirano' and then another search for connecting trains from 'Tirano' to 'St Moritz'.

Even though your reservation would reflect 'St Moritz' as the destination, you would just get off the train when it stops in Pontresina. The Bernina Express trains stop in Pontresina 10 to 20 minutes before they arrive into St. Moritz.

Generally, the Bernina Express bus and train can only be booked once within 90 days of an intended date of departure. Keep in mind, however, that the bus does not begin operating until April 14th.

If your travel comes before April 14th, you would get from Lugano to Pontresina one of two ways.

The shortest option would take about 4 hours in duration and involves 3 changes en route. You would take a train from Lugano up to Bellinzona, bus from Bellinzona to Thusis, train from Thusis to Samedan (Albula Railway), and train from Samedan to Pontresina. The Swiss Travel Pass is valid on this full route, including the bus from Bellinzona to Thusis. The Bellinzona-Thusis bus requires reservations, but these particular reservations are only able to be purchased locally when you're there. Reservations are not necessary, or even accepted, on any of the other segments, so the Swiss Travel Pass is all you would need to board.

Schedules for the trains are able to be viewed on our website. If you'd like to inquire about schedules for the buses from Bellinzona to Thusis, you would have to call us. We can be reached at 1-800-622-8600. Our current hours are 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM CT Monday to Friday. For the trains, you would do one search from Lugano to Bellinzona, another search from Thusis to Samedan, and then another search from Samedan to Pontresina.

The other option takes 7.5 hours but would have you traveling along the famed Glacier Express scenic route most of the way. There are 3 train changes en route. You would take a train from Lugano to Göschenen, another train from Göschenen to Andermatt, a train on the Glacier Express scenic line from Andermatt to Samedan, and then a train from Samedan to Pontresina. The Swiss Travel Pass covers the full route, however, the Glacier Express from Andermatt to Samedan would just require reservations in addition to the pass. Reservations are not necessary, or even accepted, on any of the other segments, so the Swiss Travel Pass is all you would need to board.

It is currently the case that Glacier Express trains for the segment from Andermatt to Samedan are not able to be reserved through our website. Instead, you would call us in order to purchase reservations for this train. This train can be booked once within 90 days of an intended date of departure.

Also, schedules for the direct trains from Lugano to Göschenen are not able to be viewed on our site. You can inquire about these schedules if you call to book reservations for the Andermatt-Samedan segment. If you wish, you can check schedules on our site for the segments from Göschenen to Andermatt and Samedan to Pontresina. For schedules from Göschenen to display on our site, you would have to type it as 'Goeschenen'.
