    Hi Jenna,

From Basel to Lucerne, you would take a direct train. The ride takes about an hour.

Connections from Lucerne to Salzburg takes about 6.5 hours in duration and involves changing trains once in Zurich along the way. Trains from Zurich to Salzburg are Railjet trains.

You would purchase tickets by searching a route under 'BOOK TRAIN TICKETS' on the homepage of our website,

Railjets from Zurich to Salzburg run along a notably scenic stretch of railway called the Arlberg Railway. The Arlberg Railway starts at Bludenz (just after crossing the border into Austria) and goes up until Innsbruck. Even the remaining part of the trip is very scenic as the Railjet train cuts across a small part of Bavaria, passing over the Rosenheim-Kufstein and Rosenheim-Salzburg Railways.

If your parents do not mind adding a couple hours to their journey time from Lucerne to Salzburg, perhaps even more scenic would be a different option, which takes just over 9 hours in duration and involves 2 train changes along the way; once in Zurich and then once in Wörgl. With this option, the Railjet leaving Zurich would still take them over the Arlberg Railway (between Bludenz and Innsbruck), but after that, they would change trains in Wörgl to switch to a regional train (RegionalExpress) running along the Salzburg-Tyrol Railway to Salzburg.

The Salzburg-Tyrol Railway stays within Austria and could be thought of as being even more scenic than the faster option through Bavaria. With that said, the option through Bavaria is definitely nothing to turn your nose up at, so it just depends on what they'd be willing to do.

Tickets for the regional trains from Wörgl to Salzburg over the Salzburg-Tyrol Railway are not able to be purchased on our website. If your parents would like to take this particular route, you would have to call us to purchase the tickets. We can be reached at 1-800-622-8600. Our current hours are 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM CT Monday to Friday and 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM CT on Saturdays.

  • Thank you so much Jeff for such a helpful answer!!

    One last question,

for Basel to Luzern and Luzern to Zurich, can those be booked ahead of time or should my parents just go the train station? Do you have a schedule? I prefer to have it all done ahead of time and printed for them. However, when I go on the SBB website to purchase, it automatically changed the date from 5/6 to 5/5 so perhaps there is no train that day?

    Thanks again for your time!!
