Munich to Salzburg & back

Does the German Rail pass cover the trip from Munich to Salzburg as well as the return trip from Salzburg back to Munich? Or, do we need an additional ticket from Salzburg?

  • Hi Jennifer,

The German Rail Pass does cover the rail line between Munich and Salzburg. On this route, there are Railjet trains and Meridian trains, both of which are covered by the German Rail Pass.

On the Railjet trains, reservations are recommended as a supplement to the rail pass. On Meridian trains, reservations are not even accepted, so the rail pass is all you would need to board.

For travel with a rail pass, you would purchase reservations for a Railjet from Munich to Salzburg by clicking the 'Seat Reservations' tab on our homepage (www.raileurope.com) and entering the route. However, for the correct reservations to be quoted, you would have to indicate that you'll be traveling with a 'Eurail Global Pass' where it asks you 'Are you traveling with a rail pass?'. Even though the German Rail Pass is valid on this route, our website would not quote you the correct reservations if you indicate that's the pass you'll be traveling with.

Trains from Munich to Salzburg follow along the very scenic 'Rosenheim-Salzburg Railway' for a stretch of the trip.
