    Hi Melissa,

Any rail pass that includes Switzerland does cover the ticket costs for the Bernina Express scenic route.

This route consists of a train between St. Moritz or Chur and Tirano, as well as a bus between Tirano and Lugano. In addition to the rail pass, reservations would be required on both the train segment and the bus segment of this trip.

After you add the rail pass to your 'Itinerary' (shopping cart), you would click 'Add A Trip' to include your reservations. On the next screen, you would just enter the cities under where it says 'Get Train Tickets or Reservations' and indicate that you'll be traveling with a rail pass where it says 'Are you traveling with a rail pass?'. Otherwise, to check reservation costs and schedules beforehand, you would click on 'Book your Rail Pass Reservations' on our actual homepage. For the Bernina Express route, you would piece together the connection by doing a separate search for each segment. Therefore, you would do one search for the train between St. Moritz or Chur and Tirano and then a separate search for the bus between Tirano and Lugano.

The Bernina Express sells out quickly, so I would recommend purchasing your reservations as soon as it becomes possible. This route can be booked once within 90 days of an intended departure date.

  • According to SwissPasses.com, the Bernina Express costs:
" Adults (and Flexi Pass without Valid Day or HFC) 129.50*$
Adults with Swiss Pass or Flexi Pass (with Valid Day) 37.00*$"
So I'm having trouble understanding your statement above: "
Any rail pass that includes Switzerland does cover the ticket costs for the Bernina Express scenic route."
    Can you help?

      Hi Jojo,

It is true that any rail pass that includes Switzerland covers the ticket costs for the Bernina Express route. Only reservation costs would be additional. The route consists of a bus from Lugano to Tirano (only operating from April to October) and a train from Tirano to St Moritz or from Tirano to Chur. Reservations are required on both the bus segment and the train segment.

I'm sorry, I'm not able to speak for what it says on other websites.

You would purchase reservations by searching a route on our homepage (www.raileurope.com), checking the box that says ‘I have a rail pass’, and then indicating the type of rail pass with which you'll be traveling. For the full route of the Bernina Express, you would do one search from Lugano to Tirano and then another search from Tirano to St Moritz and Tirano to Chur. Generally, these can be reserved once within 90 days of an intended departure date.
