Expected a smaller fee for a room on the night train from Rome to Munich. Shouldn't my rail pass cover this expense? Also, are the rooms separated by sex? How can I make sure there only women in my room?

I am booking an overnight train from Rome to Munich with my Eurorail pass. It shows the cost to be $130 for a berth in a 6-bed room. Should my rail pass not cover this expense? I expected a small fee, but did not expect to pay so much. Also, are the rooms seperated by sex? How can I make sure there are only women in my room?

    Hi Libby,

Passholder reservation costs for sleeping compartments on night trains are (generally) more than for seat reservations on day trains, since it would be an actual sleeping space being reserved. These costs vary by train and are based on the type of compartment. For instance, space in a private single or double compartment will cost more to reserve than space in a shared 6 passenger couchette.

With that said, there may be an error on our site preventing the actual passholder reservation costs from being quoted for the night train from Rome to Munich. If you do a passholder reservation search for this route and you happen to see a rectangular yellow box that says 'Train Tickets Found' listed above the costs for the night train, that means our website is quoting the regular tickets for that train instead of the correct reservation costs. If you see this 'Train Tickets Found' box for the night train, then you would have to call us to purchase the passholder reservations. We can be reached at 1-800-622-8600. Our current hours are 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM CT Monday to Friday and 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM CT on Saturdays.

Additionally, due to another error, our website may currently only be displaying the triple compartments for this particular night train, so you would also have to call us if you'd like to book another type of sleeping compartment on this train. The night train from Rome to Munich also carries single compartments, double compartments, 6 passenger couchettes, and 2nd class seats.

On this train, only the double and triple compartments would be 'gender-specific'. The 6 passenger couchettes are not. Therefore, if it's just you traveling, you can book the triple in order be reserved in a compartment with only other women. If you were to book space in a 6 passenger couchette, the compartment would be mixed gender.

When you pull up the results of your search, you would view the type of sleeping compartments being offered by clicking on the 'View' button for the costs that display for the night train.
