Overnight Between Italy and France

Hi, I am planning on purchasing a 10 day France-Italy Rail pass. With this pass, will I be able to take the overnight train from Milan to Paris on June 1st? (departs June 1 at 11:30 pm).

Also, once this pass is purchased, do I just show up for the train trips that I wish to travel on and it is taken care of? Or do I still need to reserve seats in advance?

Thanks!

Jeff

  • Hi Jeff,

The overnight train from Milan to Paris is actually not covered with the pass. You would need to purchase a full fare ticket for this route. If you are traveling on June 1, I am not sure that there is still space on this train.

As for the other trains, if you are taking a high speed train in either Italy or France, then you would also need to purchase seat reservations for those trains. You can do them locally at the station, however, you risk the passholder fares being sold out for the trains you wish to take.

I would recommend contacting us in our call center at 800-438-7245 and one of our Travel Consultants will be able to assist you with your booking. Please note that these are paper tickets and must be mailed to you prior to you departing North America.

I hope this helps you in planning the amount of days needed on your pass. Thank you and have a great trip.

    Jen

  • First, let me mention that my husband and I love traveling by train. It is our main method of transportation while in foreign countries. We use Rail Europe for passes/reservations exclusively.
Somewhere along in the planning for trips between Italy and France, I have taken the VENICE - PARIS - VENICE overnight train several times. It is not exactly inexpensive, and with a first class pass there is still a significant additional price to pay for a room for two persons.
In 2008, the service, kindness of staff, the room and bedding were perfect. In 2009, the sevice was OK, the room was OK, and the bedding acceptible. In 2011, the rolling-stock was very old; there were no 1st class rooms, but a "double room" was actually a very small 3 bed (used as 2) room in a couchette car, dirty, and the bedding was almost non exisitent.- there were no lights; there was no electricity; no porters or staff for the rooms assigned. It was pretty creepy. (Always carry a flashlight!)
*****Was this due to circumstance or is this a permanent pattern on this route?
During this last trip, we experienced taxi strikes in Athens, ferry strikes between Ancona and Patras, a luggage strike in Pisa (so we saw the tower "with bags"), and there was a conductor strike in Italy while we were on the train while in transit two times. These are the adventures of travel: I feel we are pretty "flexible", but have become disapointed with the over-night train option.

  • Hi, am trying to book reservations on the train leaving Milano Centrale @ 11:38 PM which arrives in Paris Gale Lyon @9:29 am, it does not let me purchase tickets ,instead I get the following prompt
    (11:38PM
    Milano Centrale
    9:29AM
    Paris Gare Lyon
    9hr51min
    220

This train requires the passholder to purchase a seat reservation; however the passholder fares are unavailable or sold out at this time, or your pass is not valid for the pass holder fares on this route. You can still travel on this train with a regular ticket.

Please help, are they out of reservations ? or which pass do I need to purchase in order to obtain these reservation?

We are arriving from Venice at 3:25 and wanted to spend as much time as possible in Milan before departure to Paris.

  • I have traveled between Paris and Milan using the overnight train (#221) several times over the past few years and it always departed from Gare Bercy. I just checked my tickets (for travel next week) and noticed that it indicates departure from Gare Lyon. Has the departure point for this train changed from Bercy to Lyon?

  • Hi there, I am in Italy having purchased a 4 day Eurail pass (22 Mar 2012, 691152). I have just tried to book my next trip: Ferrara/Bolgna/Perpignan (via overnight train Milan to Dijon Ville, Dijon Ville to Narbonne, Narbonne to Perpignan. The Italian gentlemen at the ticketing officer said my Eurail 4 day pass could not be used for overnight trains. I've checked the website & there is nothing about this.In fact, there is the 7PM rule, or something. Please advise what I must do.

  • *UPDATE* from my "Train Traveler" statements and question 3 months ago in regards to train travel overnight VENICE-PARIS-VENICE. I have just returned from Europe and used the overnight THELLO train 220 Venice to Paris. It was exclusively accommodations - no seat passengers. It was fully booked so early reservations still required even for a trip on a weekday at the beginning of October. The price of the trip is based on your choice of accommodation and I felt that it was reasonably competitive with other options (drive or fly). The ticket was purchased through Raileurope months in advance. Our room (2 persons same family) was excellent: clean, freshly repainted, good bedding, all electrical fixtures worked properly, sink drained, etc. In addition, a voucher was presented for a "Welcome Drink" and a Continental-type coffee/sweet in the morning before arrival. You could find your porter (very nice) when needed. It is still an Italian train which is managed by Thello and now you cannot use a pass to offset any of the costs. I am happy to say that I will continue to use this route between two of my favorite cities, Venice and Paris.
