Overnight trip from Ansbach to Budapest

I am flying into Ansbach Germany in August 2014 to visit my grandkids and then am headed to Budapest for 3 days of photography and thought that a train trip between the 2 cities would be something nice to do, plus the late night departure helps with my schedule. I am however clueless as to booking / planning this rail portion and I would like a quality train that my wife and I can sleep in. I guess that this would be 1st class or are there other options or even which train service to use and whether a rail pass is even an option.

Can someone assist with pricing suggestions, and what my options are.

Many thanks for the help

    Hi Gavin,

It would not be necessary to purchase a rail pass if you will just be traveling from Ansbach to Budapest. An overnight connection from Ansbach to Budapest would just involve changing trains in Nuremburg and Munich along the way, with the segment from Munich to Budapest being on an actual overnight train.

Generally, you would purchase tickets and check schedules by clicking on 'Find Fares & Schedules' on the homepage of our website (www.raileurope.com); however, actual sleeping compartments on the night train from Munich to Budapest are not able to be viewed or booked there at this time. For this train, only 2nd class seats would be able to be booked on our site (under the 'Economy' heading for fares). If you'd like to be reserved in an actual sleeping compartment on this train (i.e. a Double compartment), then you would have to call us at 1-800-622-8600.

Please note, our website will show 1st class seats for this train (under the 'Comfort' heading for fares), but this is an error. The night train from Munich to Budapest actually does not even offer 1st class seating, which is also true for almost all other overnight trains throughout Europe.

You can still view the schedules for the entire route by piecing together the connection on our website under 'Find Fares & Schedules'. Therefore, you would do one search for trains from Ansbach to Nuremburg, another search for trains from Nuremburg to Munich, and then another search to access the night train from Munich to Budapest.

Also, the trains that comprise of this connection can only be booked within 90 days of an intended date of departure. Since your intended travel falls outside of this time frame, you would just enter an earlier date, within the next 90 days, to get an idea of the ticket costs and view schedules when searching the route on our site.
