Paris to Barcelona, Barcelona to Lisbon, and Lisbon to Paris. Is this possible with a Eurail Select Pass?

My husband and I would like to take an overnight train from Paris to Barcelona and then take a couple of days in Lisbon before returning within a week to Paris. Possible with Eurail Select pass?

    Hi Margaret,

For the requested itinerary, I would recommend purchasing the 3 country option of the Eurail Select Pass to include France, Spain, and Portugal. For the Eurail Select Pass, you would click here: https://www.raileurope.com/rail-tickets-passes/eurail-select-pass/index.html.

    Paris to Barcelona

As of several years ago, there is no longer a direct overnight train from Paris to Barcelona. An overnight connection from Paris to Barcelona would take about 14.5 hours in duration and involves 2 train changes along the way; once in Toulouse and then once in Narbonne. The first segment, from Paris to Toulouse, would be on the actual overnight train ('Intercités de Nuit' train). Trains from Toulouse to Narbonne are either 'Intercités' trains or regional TER trains. Direct trains from Narbonne to Barcelona are 'France-Spain High Speed' trains.

Otherwise, during the day there are now direct 'France-Spain High Speed' trains from Paris to Barcelona.

With regard to the overnight option, reservations would be required on the night train from Paris to Toulouse and on the 'France-Spain High Speed' trains from Narbonne to Barcelona. For the middle segment, from Toulouse to Narbonne, you would just take a regional TER train, as a TER will connect you to the 'France-Spain High Speed' from Narbonne to Barcelona. Also, the TER trains don't even accept reservations, so the Eurail Select Pass is all you would need to board.

Generally, passholder reservations are able to be purchased through our website. However, it is currently not possible to do so for the passholder reservations on the 'France-Spain High Speed' trains (the direct trains from Narbonne to Barcelona or the direct trains from Paris to Barcelona), due to an error. Until this is resolved, you would have to purchase these reservations and inquire about their costs by calling us. We can be reached at 1-800-622-8600. Our current hours are 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM CT Monday to Friday and 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM CT on Saturdays.

For travel with a rail pass, reservations could only be purchased on our website for the night train from Paris to Toulouse. To check the passholder reservation costs, you would refer to our homepage (www.raileurope.com), click the 'Seat Reservations' tab, enter the cities, and indicate the type of rail pass with which you'll be traveling (i.e. a 'Eurail Three Country Select Pass').

Generally, the 'Intercités de Nuit' train can only be reserved within 90 days of an intended departure date, while the 'France-Spain High Speed' trains can be reserved within 90 to 120 days of an intended departure date.

For planning purposes, you can still check schedules for the non-reservable TER trains from Toulouse to Narbonne by searching the route on our homepage.

    Barcelona to Lisbon

A connection from Barcelona to Lisbon would take 14 hours in duration and involves changing trains in Madrid along the way. From Barcelona to Madrid, you would take a high-speed 'AVE' train. From Madrid to Lisbon, the only train is an overnight train called the 'Lusitania'.

The 'AVE' trains and the 'Lusitania' both require reservations as a supplement to the rail pass. Currently, however, the double sleeping compartments on the 'Lusitania' train from Madrid to Lisbon are not able to be reserved through our website. Only the 4 passenger sleeping compartments (but these are gender-specific), single compartments, and seats (offered only in 2nd class) are able to be reserved through our website at this time. We may be able to reserve you in a double sleeping compartment on this train if you call us.

In the meantime, you can check reservation costs for the 'AVE' trains from Barcelona to Madrid by clicking the 'Seat Reservations' tab on our homepage (www.raileurope.com), entering the cities, and indicating the type of rail pass with which you'll be traveling (i.e. a 'Eurail Three Country Select Pass').

Generally, trains from Barcelona to Madrid can be reserved within 90 days of an intended departure date, while the 'Lusitania' from Madrid to Lisbon can only be reserved within 60 days of an intended departure date.

    Lisbon to Paris

A connection from Lisbon to Paris would take about 21.5 hours in duration and involves 2 train change along the way; once in Madrid and then once in Girona (spelled as 'Gerona' on our website). From Lisbon to Madrid, you would once again take the 'Lusitania' overnight train. Direct trains from Madrid to Girona are high-speed 'AVE' trains, and direct trains from Girona to Paris are 'France-Spain High-Speed' trains.

Otherwise, you could go with a connection from Lisbon to Paris that takes about 22 hours in duration and involves changing trains only once in Hendaye (in Basque Country) along the way. The segment from Lisbon to Hendaye would be on an overnight train (Spanish Night Train), and from Hendaye to Paris you would be on a high-speed 'TGV' train.

With regard to the option via Madrid and Girona, reservations would be required on each train. However, as I made mention of above, double sleeping compartments on the 'Lusitania' (Lisbon-Madrid) and passholder reservations on the 'France-Spain High-Speed' (Girona-Paris) are currently not able to be booked through our website. Therefore, you would have to call us for these particular passholder reservations. Currently, only the 4 passenger sleeping compartments (but these are gender-specific), single compartments, and seats (offered only in 2nd class) are able to be reserved through our website for this train.

In the meantime, you can check reservation costs for the 'AVE' trains from Madrid to Girona by clicking the 'Seat Reservations' tab on our homepage (www.raileurope.com), entering the cities, and indicating the type of rail pass with which you'll be traveling (i.e. a 'Eurail Three Country Select Pass'). When searching trains to Girona on our website, you would just have to be sure to type it as 'Gerona'.

With regard to the option via Hendaye, reservations would be required on each segment. Just like the 'Lusitania', however, double compartments on the night train from Lisbon to Hendaye are not able to reserved through our website at this time. Therefore, you would call us if you'd like to book yourselves in a double sleeping compartment on this train. Currently, only the 4 passenger sleeping compartments (but these are gender-specific), single compartments, and seats (offered only in 2nd class) are able to be reserved through our website for this train.

In the meantime, you can check reservation costs for the 'TGV' trains from Hendaye to Paris by clicking the 'Seat Reservations' tab on our homepage (www.raileurope.com), entering the cities, and indicating the type of rail pass with which you'll be traveling (i.e. a 'Eurail Three Country Select Pass').

Generally, the night trains from Lisbon to Madrid and Lisbon to Hendaye can only be reserved within 60 days of an intended departure date, trains from Madrid to Girona and Hendaye to Paris can be reserved within 90 days of an intended departure date, and the 'France-Spain High Speed' trains from Girona to Paris can be reserved within 90-120 days of an intended departure date.
