Passfinder combinations between countries?

Using Passfinder for travel in Germany, Italy, and France, I was recommended to purchase a German rail pass and the Eurail France - Italy pass. I will travel from Munich to Venice to Paris and back to Munich. Do these two passes cover travel between Germany and the other countries?

  • For this itinerary you will want to look into the point to point tickets. Seat reservations would be additional if added to a rail pass. For point to point tickets, the seat reservation would be included. If your plans include the overnight train from Venice to Paris then the rail pass wouldn't be valid and a point to point ticket would be required.

If you choose the pass option and plan to take a daytime train from Venice to Paris via Milan, then I recommend a Eurail Select Pass for 3 countries (Germany, Austria and Italy) as well as a France Rail Pass. Since the train from Munich to Venice travels through Austria it would be necessary that the pass cover travel within Austria. You would use the Eurail Select Pass to travel from Munich to Venice and Venice to Milan. You would then use the France Rail Pass to travel from Milan to Paris. For the travel from Paris to Munich you would use both passes; the France Rail Pass from Paris to the border and the Eurail Select Pass from the border into Munich. Again, with the rail pass you will want to reserve your seats in advance for each trip by visiting http://www.raileurope.com/us/rail/poi....

You can also call us at 1-800-438-7245 and one of our Travel Consultants can assist with the booking of these tickets to ensure the correct reservations are booked for each leg of your itinerary.

    Hi Jordan,

The passes suggested to you would actually not cover the ticket costs for travel between Germany and Italy. If you were to travel from Germany to Italy (or vice versa), you would have to include either Austria or Switzerland on a rail pass you purchase. I apologize for any incorrect information you were advised of on our website.

Therefore, if you were to purchase rail passes, you could purchase a France Rail Pass in combination with a 3 country Eurail Select Pass to include Germany, Italy and Austria (if you are traveling from Munich to Venice, then you would pass through Austria along the way).

However, for the requested itinerary, I would actually recommend that you purchase regular point-to-point tickets instead of any rail pass combination.

The most feasible way to travel from Venice to Paris is by way of a direct overnight train between these cities that no longer accepts any rail pass to cover its ticket costs. Considering that no rail pass is even accepted for such a major part of your trip (and that, as of the new year, France can no longer be included on the Eurail Select Passes), purchasing regular point-to-point tickets would work out to be your most economical option.

You would purchase point-to-point tickets and check ticket costs by clicking on 'Find Fares & Schedules' on the homepage of our website, www.raileurope.com.

However, there is currently an error on our website that would prevent trains between Munich and Venice from being viewed or booked there. Until this is fixed, you would call us at 1-800-622-8600 to inquire about ticket costs and purchase tickets for this part of your trip. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Trains comprising of a daytime connection from Munich to Venice, the night train from Venice to Paris and trains from Paris to Munich can be booked within 90 days of an intended date of departure.

There is also a direct overnight train from Munich to Venice, which can ideally be booked up to 180 days in advance of a departure.

  • Thank you so much! You have been very helpful. We have decided to cut Paris from our itinerary, and just travel between Germany and Italy. If that is the case, I think you would recommend getting the select pass with Germany, Austria, and Italy, correct?
