Planning a trip from Rome to Venice to Milan to Interlaken to Paris to Amsterdam to Prague. Thinking of buying a pass. Which trains would require us to make reservations?

I am planning a trip to Europe,these are my traveling days
Land in Rome
From Rome to Venice in morning and then to Milan at night ( 1st day of traveling )
From Milan to Interlaken ( 2nd day of traveling)
Interlaken to Paris ( 3rd day of traveling)
Paris to Amsterdam ( 4th day of traveling)
Amsterdam to Prague (5th day of traveling)

we are a group of 4, 2 couples(age 26-35) and we are thinking of buying a pass of 5 days traveling within 1 month, so for which routes we have to reserve our seats? and which trains we can take just by showing our eurorail pass?
for Amsterdam to prague the route is quite long so can we take a night a train?
Secondly in my first day traveling can i use my eurorail pass?

    Hi Tehreem,

    For that many countries, you would purchase the Eurail Global Pass. For this pass, you would click here: https://www.raileurope.com/rail-tickets-passes/eurail-global-pass/index.html.

    Most of your trains will require reservations in addition to the pass. For travel with a rail pass, you would purchase reservations by clicking the 'Seat Reservations' tab on our homepage (www.raileurope.com), entering a route, and indicating the type of rail pass with which you'll be traveling (i.e. 'Eurail Global Pass').

    Rome to Venice

    To travel from Rome to Venice, you would take a high-speed Le Frecce (Frecciargento and Frecciarossa) train or a regular InterCity (IC) train. These trains do require reservations in addition to a rail pass. Generally, these trains can be reserved once within 90 to 120 days of an intended date of departure.

    Please note, there is also a train that runs from Rome to Venice called the 'Italo'; however, rail passes are not accepted on these trains.

    Venice to Milan

    From Venice to Milan, you would take a Le Frecce (Frecciabianca and Frecciarossa) train or a EuroCity (EC) train. These trains also require reservations in addition to a rail pass. Generally, these trains can be reserved once within 90 to 120 days of an intended date of departure.

    Milan to Interlaken

    A connection from Milan to Interlaken takes about 3 to 3.5 hours in duration and involves 2 train changes along the way; once in Brig and then once in Spiez.

    Of the trains that comprise of this connection, only the train from Milan to Brig would require reservations in addition to the pass. Trains from Milan to Brig are EuroCity (EC) trains. These EuroCity trains can be reserved once within 90 to 120 days of an intended date of departure.

    On the trains from Brig to Spiez and Spiez to Interlaken, reservations are not at all necessary, so the rail pass is all you would need to board.

    For your reference, you can still check schedules for these segments by doing a search on our site (even though you wouldn't actually proceed to purchase the reservations). When you pull up the results of these searches, there may be a message attached to each train that says 'Reservation Recommended'. However, it is really not necessary that you have reservations on these trains, so you can disregard that message. You would only need reservations on the train from Milan up to Brig.

    Interlaken to Paris

    A connection from Interlaken to Paris takes just over 5 hours in duration and involves changing trains once in Basel along the way.

    On the trains from Interlaken to Basel, reservations are not necessary, so the rail pass is all you'd need to board. However, reservations would be required on the trains from Basel to Paris. trains from Basel to Paris are high-speed TGV Lyria trains.

    For your reference, you can still check schedules for the segment from Interlaken to Basel by doing a search on our site (even though you wouldn't actually proceed to purchase the reservations). Once again, you may see the message that says 'Reservations Recommended' for each of these trains when you pull up the results of your search; however, you can rest assured that the rail pass is all you would need to board.

    On the trains from Basel to Paris, the cost would more like a discounted cost for a ticket. The Eurail Global Pass enables you to purchase tickets for a direct train from Basel to Paris at a discounted rate called the 'Passholder 2'. Generally, you would be able to purchase the 'Passholder 2' tickets for one of these trains on our website; however, tickets at this rate are currently only able to be purchased by calling us. We can be reached at 1-800-622-8600.

    The TGV Lyria trains can be booked once within 90 days of an intended date of departure. The 'Passholder 2' rates on the TGV Lyria can sell out very quickly, so it would be recommended that these tickets/reservations be purchased as soon as possible.

    Paris to Amsterdam

    The trains from Paris to Amsterdam are high-speed Thalys trains on which reservations would be required in addition to the rail pass. Generally, Thalys trains can be booked once within 90 days of an intended departure date. Passholder reservations on the Thalys trains are known to sell out very quickly, so this is another route you would want to be sure to book as soon as possible.

    When you pull up the results of your passholder search on our website for this route, if you see a rectangular yellow box with a message that says 'Train Tickets Found', then it likely means that the passholder reservations are already sold out on that train and what you're being quoted is the regular ticket. If you'd like to verify availability for the passholder reservations on a particular train, you can call us.

    Amsterdam to Prague

    A daytime connection from Amsterdam to Prague takes about 12.5 hours in duration and involves changing trains once in Berlin along the way. Direct trains from Amsterdam to Berlin are InterCity (IC) trains. The trains from Berlin to Prague are EuroCity (EC) trains. On both of these trains, reservations would be highly recommended in addition to the rail pass.

    An overnight connection from Amsterdam to Prague take about 15 hours in duration and involves changing trains once in Duisburg en route. The segment from Duisburg to Prague would be on the actual overnight train. Trains from Amsterdam to Duisburg are InterCity (IC) or InterCity Express (ICE) trains. The night train from Duisburg to Prague is the 'Kopernikus' City Night Line (CNL) train. On the trains from Amsterdam to Duisburg, reservations are highly recommended. On the night train from Duisburg to Prague, reservations would be required. Please note, however, the overnight option from Amsterdam to Prague would require the use of 2 'travel days' on a flexi rail pass.

    When booking reservations for the daytime option, you would just piece together the connection by doing a separate search for each segment. Therefore, you would do one search for trains from Amsterdam to Berlin and then another search for connecting trains from Berlin to Prague. The trains from Amsterdam to Berlin and Berlin to Prague can be reserved once within 90 days of an intended departure date,

    Due to an error, passholder reservations for the night train from Duisburg to Prague are currently not able to be booked on our website, but you can purchase passholder reservations for this train by calling us. In the meantime, you can check reservation costs for the segment from Amsterdam to Duisburg on our site. Trains from Amsterdam to Duisburg can be reserved once within 90 days of an intended departure date, while the night train from Duisburg to Prague can generally be reserved once within 120 days of an intended departure date.

    For when you're in Interlaken, it would be important to note that the Eurail Global Pass does not cover the trek up to Jungfraujoch. However, this pass would enable you to receive a 25% discount for the excursion. To receive the 25% discount, you would purchase the '1 Day Round-Trip Journey from Interlaken - For Use Only With Eurail Pass Which Includes Switzerland' option of a separate pass called the 'Jungfraujoch Top of Europe'. You would purchase the 'Jungfraujoch Top of Europe' here: https://www.raileurope.com/activities/jungfraujoch/index.html.

    Reservations are not accepted for any part of this trip. The 'Jungfraujoch Top of Europe' is an open voucher that you would use to hop on any of the trains on the journey up to Jungfraujoch and back. The 'Jungfraujoch Top of Europe' is only valid for a period of 24 hours, so your round-trip would just have to be completed within that time frame.

    There are 2 different routes you can take out of Interlaken on the way up to Jungfraujoch; one via Grindelwald and the other via Lauterbrunnen.

    Via Grindelwald, the trek up to Jungfraujoch would look like this:

    -Interlaken to Grindelwald on the Bernese Oberland Railway

    -Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg on the Wengernalp Railway

    -Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch on the Jungfrau Railway (the highest railway in Europe)

    Via Lauterbrunnen, the trek up to Jungfraujoch would look like this:

    -Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen on the Bernese Oberland Railway

    -Lauterbrunnen to Kleine Scheidegg on the Wengernalp Railway

    -Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch on the Jungfrau Railway (the highest railway in Europe)

      Update:

      Reservations are now possible for the Jungfrau Railway segment between Kleine Scheidegg and Jungfraujoch. In fact, as a supplement to the ‘Jungfraujoch Top of Europe’, reservations are now highly recommended on the Kleine Scheidegg-Jungfraujoch segment for travel between the months of May and October. The Kleine-Scheidegg-Jungfraujoch reservations can be purchased locally at the preceding stations in Interlaken, Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, and Wengen; as well as the nearby station of Mürren.

      Reservations are not accepted for the segments between Interlaken and Kleine Scheidegg, whether you take the route via Grindelwald or the route via Lauterbrunnen. Therefore, the ‘Jungfraujoch Top of Europe’ would be all you’d need to board for these segments.

    To begin the ascent to Schilthorn, you would take the Bernese Oberland Railway from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen. With the '1 Day Round-Trip Journey from Interlaken - For Use Only With Eurail Pass Which Includes Switzerland' option of the 'Schilthorn/Piz Gloria' pass, there are 2 different routes you would be able to take to reach Schilthorn from Lauterbrunnen. As is recommended for the Jungfraujoch trip, you might want to consider making your ascent via one route and then descending via the other.

    One route would have you taking the Grütschalpbahn (cable car) from Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp. In Grütschalp, you would switch to the Mürrenbahn train to Mürren. From Mürren, you would then continue on the Schilthornbahn (cable cars) up to Schilthorn.

    The other route would have you taking a bus from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg. In Stechelberg, you would switch to the Schilthornbahn cable cars that will take you to Schilthorn. On the way from Stechelberg to Schilthorn, there are stops in Gimmelwald, Mürren, and Birg.

    'Piz Gloria’ refers to the panoramic revolving restaurant at the Schilthorn summit.

    can i take a train from Rome to Venice in morning and then in evening we take a train from Venice to Milan and reach Milan around 11pm,both trains in one day,then will it count as 1 traveling day?

      Yes, Tehreem. The travel you just described would only count as one 'travel day' on a flexi rail pass.

      Rail passes can be offered in two different basic formats: flexi and consecutive.

      Most rail passes are only offered in 'flexi' form; however, the Eurail Global Pass happens to offer both options.

      The 'Flexipass' Options

      A flexipass allows for a set number of travel days, which must be completed within a longer time frame. If you choose the 5 or 7 day options of the Eurail Global Pass, that longer time frame would be 1 month. If you choose the 10 or 15 day options of the Eurail Global Pass, that longer time frame would be 2 months. With a flexipass, the 1 or 2 month validity period would start to count down after you get your pass 'validated' at the station, which is something you would do before boarding your first train.

      'Travel days' on a flexipass refer to how many separate days you plan on using your rail pass. A ‘travel day’ is a 24 hour period from midnight to midnight. You may take as many trains as you wish during the 24 hour time frame and still only use one day of travel on a pass. For instance, if you were take a day train from 'city A' to 'city B' and then take a connecting train to 'city C' on the same day, then you would only use up one day of travel on your rail pass. In contrast, if you were to take that connecting train to 'city C' on the next day, that would constitute 2 days of rail travel on your pass.

      With a flexipass, if you happen to take a night train that departs prior to 7 pm and arrives into the destination the following morning, then 2 days of rail travel will be used up on a rail pass. Most night trains; however, do depart after 7 pm, in which case only 1 day of rail travel would be used up on a rail pass.

      A 1 month flexipass would be valid until the previous day of the following month from when you begin your travel. To elaborate, if you were to begin using a 1 month pass on April 26th, then the pass would be valid until May 25th at midnight. This is how it works no matter how many days comprise of the month a passenger intends to begin their travel during.

      It would work the same with a flexipass valid for 2 months. Therefore, if you were to begin using a 2 month pass on July 26th, then the pass would be valid until August 25th at midnight.

      This is how it works no matter how many days comprise of the month(s) when you'll be traveling. It would work the same with a flexipass valid for 2 months.

      The 'Consecutive' Options

      The consecutive day passes allow for unlimited train travel within a set time frame. Therefore, if you were to purchase the 15 day consecutive option of a Eurail Global Pass, that means you would be entitled to unlimited travel within that time frame of 15 days. You wouldn't have to travel every day, but you can if you want. Considering this, 'travel days' aren't applicable to the consecutive day passes.
