I’m concerned

Already have my tickets for travel between Lisbon & Porto, but how do I make my reservations?

I have purchased 6 open ticket from you for travel between Lisbon and Porto. I will arrive in Lisbon 1 week before using any of these tickets. Do I have to go to the train station to make a reservation for a specific time or can I call from my hotel to make reservations?

  • Hi Rick.

The trains between Lisbon and Porto do require reservations to go along with the tickets we issue. You can purchase the reservations at any station in Portugal. When you go to purchase the reservations, just be sure to mention that you already have the tickets, so that they don't charge you for those as well.

If you wish, you can try checking with your hotel to see if they know of any other way to purchase the reservations.

As it is, the national rail network of Portugal does not enable any of their trains to be reserved from anywhere outside the country. Therefore, we are only able to issue the tickets that you would need to board a train between Lisbon and Porto.

  • I’m pissed off
This is the first time that I have heard anything about having to pay for a seat reservation. I bought the tickets online. I called to ask why I did not receive a seat reservation. No one mentioned that I had to pay for a seat reservstion. I realize
that the Portugese Railway system is the cause of this situation, but I believe you(RAILEUROPE) have a responsibility to explain this to your customers. Buying a ticket through you does not provide any advantage to me, It does not guarentee me a seat and I have a surprise surcharge to pay when I arrive in Portugal.
This is very poor service and borders on Fraud. Your logo should include "Caveat emptor, sucker!"

  • I’m feeling stupid
I wish that I had seen this warning from TripAdvisor before purchasing tickets from RailEurope. It could have saved me time and trouble:

"DO NOT use Rail Europe, Eurail or similar ticket agencies to buy tickets for Portuguese Alfa Pendular or Intercity trains. These agencies cannot issue the required seat reservations. These you will have to arrange for locally (at the station) and pay extra. Always buy tickets at www.cp.pt and nowhere else."

  • Hi Rick.

I apologize, as it is true that the national rail network of Portugal does not enable any of their trains to be reserved from anywhere outside of their borders. Rest assured, the reservation is a very small fee, and you will not have any trouble getting your reservations at the station. Since it is not possible to purchase seat reservations for Portuguese trains from locations outside of Portugal, it says the following when purchasing tickets for these trains on our website:

We apologize if there was any confusion.
