A very popular trip to Switzerland involves flying into Zurich and heading to the stunning Bernese Oberland region, most notably Interlaken, which serves as the gateway to the area. Once you're in Interlaken, you can connect to various mountain railways and cable cars in the area.

But did you know there are 2 different routes you can take to travel between Zurich and Interlaken? Typically, traveling by rail from Zurich to Interlaken involves changing trains once in Bern along the way. However, you can also make this trip by following along a segment of the famed GoldenPass scenic route via Lucerne.

If you need a round-trip, then you can do both. I'd recommend taking the GoldenPass option for your outbound, so that can be your welcome to Switzerland and whet your appetite for what's to come. Then you can take the faster way via Bern for your return back to Zurich.

Zurich to Interlaken via Lucerne & the GoldenPass

Connections from Zurich to Interlaken via the GoldenPass take 2hr 51min and involve changing trains just the once in Lucerne along the way.

There are also direct trains to Lucerne from the station at Zurich Airport, so you can board there if you need to. If you do board at the Zurich Airport station, the connections to Interlaken via Lucerne take 3hr40min. The trains from Lucerne to Interlaken represent one segment of the GoldenPass scenic route.

When checking schedules and purchasing tickets for this option on www.raileurope.com, you would just have to break up your search in Lucerne. Therefore, you would do one search from Zurich to Lucerne and then another search for connecting trains from Lucerne to Interlaken.

If you plan to leave right out of the Zurich Airport, then you would just have to type 'Zurich Airport' for Zurich in the field for the departure city.

The trains from Lucerne to Interlaken all have panoramic windows for looking out at the surrounding scenery.

If you'll be traveling with the Swiss Travel Pass, it would be all you'd need to be covered for this trip, and you would not need to purchase tickets. Trains from Zurich to Lucerne do not accept reservations, so the Swiss Travel Pass is all you need to board. On trains from Lucerne to Interlaken, reservations are possible but not necessary, so the Swiss Travel Pass is again all you'd need to board.

    Zurich to Interlaken via Bern

The fastest and most common connections from Zurich to Interlaken take 1hr55min or 1hr56min in duration and involve changing trains once in Bern along the way.

There are also direct trains to Bern that leave right out of the station at Zurich Airport. If board at the Zurich Airport, the connections to Interlaken via Bern take 2hr10min or 2hr11min in duration.

When checking schedules and purchasing tickets for this option on www.raileurope.com, you should be able to do one search for the full connection from Zurich to Interlaken. When you pull up the results of your search, just click on a departure to ensure it reflects the transfer in Bern. Otherwise, you can break up your search in Bern by doing one search from Zurich to Bern and another search for later trains from Bern to Interlaken.

Again, just be sure to type 'Zurich Airport' for Zurich if you plan on leaving right out of the station at the airport.

If you'll be traveling with the Swiss Travel Pass, it would be all you'd need to be covered for this trip, and you would not need to purchase tickets. On trains from Zurich to Bern and Bern to Interlaken, reservations are not necessary at all, so the Swiss Travel Pass would be all you'd to board.
