Rail pass or not for night train from Helsinki to Rovaniemi??

We are a group of 3 adults and 4 children taking the night train from Helsinki to Rovaniemi this December. We would need to purchase 2 x 2 berth cabins for our return trip costing about 900 euro. Would it be a better option to buy rail passes and would these cover that particular train journey with a sleeping cabin. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Catherine,

The Eurail Finland Pass does cover ticket costs for the night train from Helsinki to Rovaniemi (Santa Claus Express). This train would just require reservations as a supplement to the rail pass.

For travel with a rail pass, you would purchase reservations for the night train from Helsinki to Rovaniemi by clicking the 'Seat Reservations' tab on our homepage (www.raileurope.com), entering a route, and indicating the type of rail pass with which you'll be traveling (i.e. a 'Eurail Finland Pass').

Generally, trains in Finland can only be booked once within 60 days of an intended departure date. Since your intended travel falls outside of this time frame, you would just have to enter an earlier date, some time within the next 60 days, to get an idea of the reservation costs and view schedules in the meantime.

For the Eurail Finland Pass itself, you would click here: https://www.raileurope.com/rail-tickets-passes/eurail-finland-pass/index.html.

If you'll be doing this as a round-trip, the total for the rail pass (and passholder reservations) versus the total for regular tickets would be comparable; however, the the regular ticket costs for this route are not able to be viewed on our website. If you'd like to inquire about regular ticket costs for the night train between Helsinki and Rovaniemi, you would have to call us. We can be reached at 1-800-622-8600. Our current hours are 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM CT Monday to Friday and 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM CT on Saturdays.

Please note, accommodations on the night train between Helsinki and Rovaniemi are currently limited only to Single compartments, Double compartments, and 2nd class seats.
