  • Hi Gary,

Whether or not the best option to for your travels is a rail pass would depend on many different factors.

If you will just be traveling from Zurich to Milan and then one other trip, it is likely that your best option would be to purchase regular point-to-point tickets, as opposed to any rail pass. You can purchase tickets and check schedules by clicking on 'Find Fares & Schedules' on the homepage of our website, www.raileurope.com.

Generally, trains in this part of Europe can only be booked within 90 days of an intended date of departure. If your intended travel falls outside of this time frame, you would just enter a date within the next 90 days to get an idea of costs and view schedules when searching a route on our site.
    • Only if you were doing more train trips would a rail pass be a more feasible option for you, in which case you would purchase a rail pass that includes each of the countries you'll be traveling through (i.e. a Eurail Select Pass that includes Switzerland, Italy, and Austria).

To view our rail passes, you would go to the homepage of our website, click on 'Find & Book Rail Passes' and then select any of the countries you intend to travel in from the drop-down menus that appear under where it says 'Find a Rail Pass'. Otherwise, you can click 'view our complete rail pass list' after clicking on 'Find & Book Rail Passes'.

The Eurail Select Pass is the pass that allows travelers to pre-select a limit of 3, 4, or 5 bordering countries. For information on the Eurail Select Pass, you would click here: http://www.raileurope.com/rail-ticket... .

  • Point to point tickets definitely are the best option given your travel plans. I have found seat reservations to be more important than 1st vs. 2nd class on Swiss and Austrian intercity trains (likewise for most Italian routes): 2nd class is almost always perfectly clean and comfortable; however, some riders hog every nearby seat with their packages and jackets and then play a variety of "my husband/wife is in the dining car and will soon be back" combined with "you must speak hochdeutsch if you expect me to listen to you" with quasi-frazzled American tourists who are desperately trying to find seats.
