Railpass reservations: what if unavailable or sold out?

Looking into a railpass versus individual tickets for 3 of us (2 adults, 1 -8-year-old) in July and decided to try to test out making a railpass reservation on a trip from Gent to Amsterdam. I keep getting this message: This train requires the pass holder to purchase a seat reservation; however the reservations are unavailable or sold out at this time, or your rail pass is not valid for the reservations on this route. You can still travel on this train with a regular ticket.

Does that mean I can't use a railpass on this trip or the website just won't let me book it now? We're going on to Germany and France after Amsterdam, so it seems like a railpass is the way to go. But maybe I'm better off buying individual tickets?

Thanks!

  • Good Morning Elizabeth,
The trains from Ghent to Amsterdam are regional trains and therefore cannot be reserved. You can just hop on any train with your pass and sit wherever there is an available seat. Please note that if you are taking the Thalys train, those trains do require reservations and are an additional cost to the pass. For trains with in the Benelux countries I would recommend taking the regional trains to save a little extra money.

However, since you are traveling into France, I would make sure those trains still have passholder fares available before purchasing your pass. Those can sell out quickly so please make sure you reserve them as soon as possible. Also all international trains will require a reservation as well, so please make sure you purchase those at the same time as the pass.

Also, if you are purchasing the Eurail Select pass with the free day of travel, this promotion expires on May 29 and can be taken off the website any time that day. I would purchase these tickets as soon as possible to make sure you get that extra free day of travel.

I hope this information helps you in planning your vacation. Happy traveling!

One more question - it looks like booking a passholder reservation from Brussels to Amsterdam is more expensive than buying a ticket. Does that make sense?

  • Hello,
Yes this does make sense. If you have a pass, you can take any regional train on that route with out purchasing a reservation. Sometimes the Thalys trains do have full fare tickets which are less expensive than the passholder fares if booked far enough in advance.
I hope this information is useful. Have a great day!
