Reservations Required for Spain?

I see that on most schedules reservations are required, and this was confirmed with me via a phone call with a rep last Friday. Yet, when I try to book a reservations it says it cannot book reservations and I should inquire locally. Would we be able to book reservations if we called RailEurope to book our preferred trains? Thank you.

    Hi Jennifer.

If a particular train doesn't display when you indicate that you'll be traveling with a rail pass, it could be due to any of the following reasons:

1.) The train is reservable, but the passholder fares have already sold out. In this case, you would only be able to take the train by purchasing regular tickets, unless those too have already sold out.

2.) The train actually doesn't even accept reservations, in which case a rail pass is all you would need to board.

3.) There is an error on our website that is preventing the passholder fares from displaying, in which case you may need to call us to book the reservations.

4.) The operator for the service has not yet made the passholder reservations available to be booked by loading them into the international booking system. In this case, you would likely have to contact us to verify, and then you would keep checking until the train in question is made available to be booked. Generally, reservable trains in Spain can be booked within 60 to 90 days of an intended date of departure, but the Spanish rail network can sometimes take even longer to open up their trains for bookings at certain times during the year.

What is the train/route you're attempting to book?

  • I believe it's likely #4. I spoke with a rep yesterday, and even she couldn't book reservations. She started a booking for me, that I'll go ahead and purchase with our desired reservations. And the rep said once reservations are available and booked, our tickets will be sent to us UPS. Hope that sounds right to you, too. Our legs are: Madrid to Seville on 9/6; Seville to Granada 9/9; Granada to Madrid via Antequera Santa Ana on 9/11 (I understand the Granada to Antequera leg is bus due to rail construction); and Madrid to Barcelona 9/14. Thank you!

Yes, with regard to these routes, that is the case. The national rail network of Spain actually has not yet enabled trains to be booked for dates beyond September 6th. Therefore, at this point in time, you would only be able to purchase reservations for your train from Madrid to Seville right on September 6th.

We hope the national rail network of Spain makes these dates available very soon, hopefully within the next few weeks, at which point your order can be confirmed and the reservations shipped to you.
