Sargans to Vienna: Swiss Travel Pass or Point-to-point ticket?

Hi,

I have a Swiss Travel Pass. Am I able to use it when travelling to Austria from Switzerland or will I need to buy a point-to-point ticket? If I need a point-to-point ticket does the Swiss Pass get me a discount?

    Hi Quin,

The Swiss Travel Pass is not valid for travel in Austria. If you'll be taking the train from Sargans to Vienna, the Swiss Travel Pass would only cover you as far as the Swiss/Austrian border. Therefore, you would need a separate point-to-point ticket to cover you the rest of the way. Specifically, the ticket you would need to purchase is a ticket from the town of Buchs (at the border) to Vienna. With the combination of the Swiss Travel Pass and the Buchs-Vienna open ticket, you would be able to remain on the train for the full duration of the ride all the way from Sargans to Vienna.

You would purchase the ticket from Buchs to Vienna by doing a search under 'Find Train Tickets' on our homepage, www.raileurope.com. When entering your search for this ticket, you would click 'No' where it asks you 'Are you traveling with a rail pass?'.

Trains from Sargans to Vienna are Railjet trains.

Please note, there is impending construction on the rail line between Sargans and Vienna. Starting in late May, as a result of the construction, passengers would be taken by bus from Sargans to the Austrian town of Feldkirch, where the train picks up. The Railjet trains will run directly from Feldkirch to Vienna.

The Swiss Travel Pass will be accepted by the bus, but it would still only be valid up to the Swiss/Austrian border. For the remaining part of the route, you would still need the Buchs-Vienna ticket that I advised of above.

Once again, you would purchase the ticket from Buchs to Vienna by doing a search under 'Find Train Tickets' on our homepage, www.raileurope.com. When entering your search for this ticket, you would click 'No' where it asks you 'Are you traveling with a rail pass?'. For dates after the construction begins, the results of your search will show connections from Buchs to Vienna with a train change in Feldkirch. You would disregard the times that display for the segment from Buchs to Feldkirch, since it would actually the case that you would be taking a bus right from Sargans to Feldkirch.

If these options don't display when you pull up the results of your search, you would have to call us and we can still issue you the correct ticket. We can be reached at 1-800-622-8600. Our current hours are 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM CT Monday to Friday and 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM CT on Saturdays.
