Travel through 4 countries, but your Pass Finder tool tells me to purchase the pass for 5 countries. Brussels-Frankfurt, Frankfurt-Lugano, Lugano-Parma, & Parma-Rome

I used the tool to select travel from the connecting countries including Brussels to Frankfurt am Main and then Lugano, Switzerland to Parma, Italy then Parma Italy to Rome. I count as 4 countries. I put the Eurail Select 4 in the cart and it shows 5 Countries. What am I missing? Isn't this four countries?

    Hi Tim,

I would advise against using the 'Pass Finder' tool on our website. For the requested itinerary, you would need only the 4 country option of the Eurail Select Pass to include the Benelux, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy.

Belgium is included as a part of the 'Benelux'. The Benelux covers Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg and counts them together as one ‘country’ for the purpose of rail passes. Therefore, to account for Belgium, you would include the ‘Benelux’ as one of the countries on your Eurail Select Pass.

For the Eurail Select Pass, you would click here: https://www.raileurope.com/rail-tickets-passes/eurail-select-pass/index.html.

For travel with a rail pass, you would purchase any reservations by clicking the 'Seat Reservations' tab on our homepage (www.raileurope.com), entering a route, and indicating the type of rail pass with which you'll be traveling (i.e. a 'Eurail Four Country Select Pass').

    Brussels to Frankfurt

From Brussels to Frankfurt, you would take a high-speed ICE (InterCity Express) train. On ICE trains, reservations are recommended as a supplement to a rail pass. Generally, trains from Brussels to Frankfurt can be reserved within 90 to 120 days of an intended departure date.

    Frankfurt to Lugano

A connection from Frankfurt to Lugano takes just over 6 hours in duration and involves changing trains once in Basel along the way.

Trains from Frankfurt to Basel are ICE or EC (EuroCity) trains on which reservations are recommended as a supplement to a rail pass. Generally, these trains can be reserved once within 90 to 120 days of an intended departure date.

On trains from Basel to Lugano, reservations are not necessary. Therefore, the Eurail Select Pass is all you would need to board. You can still view the schedules for trains from Basel to Lugano by doing a search on our website.

    Lugano to Parma

A connection from Lugano to Parma takes about 3.5 hours in duration and involves changing trains once in Milan along the way.

Trains from Lugano to Milan are EC trains on which reservations are required as a supplement to a rail pass. Generally, these trains can be reserved within 90 to 120 days of an intended departure date.

From Milan to Parma, there are Frecciabianca, IC (InterCity), and regional trains. On the Frecciabianca and IC trains, reservations are required as a supplement to a rail pass. Generally, the Frecciabianca and IC trains can be reserved within 120 days of an intended departure date. The regional trains don't accept reservations, so the Eurail Select Pass is all you would need to board.

You can view schedules for the regional trains from Milan to Parma by clicking 'No' where it asks you 'Are you traveling with a rail pass?' when doing a search on our website. When you pull up the results of your search, the regional trains can be distinguished by their train numbers. Train numbers for the regional trains from Milan to Parma are 4 digits in length and begin with a '2'.

    Parma to Rome

A connection from Parma to Rome takes about 3.5 hours in duration and involves changing trains once in Bologna along the way.

From Parma to Bologna, there are regional trains, Frecciabianca trains, and IC trains. Once again, the regional trains don't accept reservations, so the Eurail Select Pass is all you would need to board. On the Frecciabianca and IC trains, reservations are required as a supplement to a rail pass. Generally, the Frecciabianca and IC trains can be reserved within 120 days of an intended departure date.

You can view schedules for the regional trains from Parma to Bologna by clicking 'No' where it asks you 'Are you traveling with a rail pass?' when doing a search on our website. When you pull up the results of your search, the regional trains can be distinguished by their train numbers. Train numbers for the regional trains from Parma to Bologna are either 4 digits in length beginning with a '2' or a '6', or else they are 5 digits in length beginning with a '1'.

From Bologna to Rome, there are Frecciarossa and Frecciabianca trains. On these trains, reservations are required as a supplement to a rail pass. Generally, these trains can be reserved within 120 days of an intended departure date.
