Sofia, Bulgaria to Kavala, Greece

I'd like to travel from Sofia, Bulgaria with my aunt and daughter on June 11,2012 to Kavala, Greece and return to Sofia, Bulgaria from Kavala, Greece on June 18,2012. Does anyone know the best way and most cost effective way to travel between these countries/cities.

    Hi Marguerite,

As of a couple years ago, international rail travel into and out of Greece has been suspended indefinitely. Therefore, you would have to take a bus or taxi that crosses the border between Bulgaria and Greece, where you can then continue on by rail again. The most notable bus would be one that operates between Sofia and Thessaloniki in northern Greece, which would also make the most sense in terms of continuing on to Kavala. However, there is no rail station in Kavala, so you would then switch to another bus in Thessaloniki that would take you there. You would pay to board these buses locally upon arrival. You would then do the same in reverse for your return back to Sofia.

    Update:

The rail line between Thessaloniki and Sofia and the rail line between Thessaloniki and Belgrade have both recently been reintroduced.
