Can I take the scenic Semmering Line from Vienna to Ljubljana with my Eurail Global Pass?

I saw the description of the Semmering Line and it looked great. Could I go from Vienna to Ljubljana and include that line as part of the journey?

  • Hi Rich,

Yes, great idea to take the Semmering! Fortunately, connections from Vienna to Ljubljana do happen to go over the Semmering Line.

There is one direct train from Vienna to Ljubljana in the early morning. Otherwise, the connections involve changing trains once in Villach along the way. The direct train and the connections that involve changing in Villach both take just over 6 hours in duration.

On the path of the train from Vienna to Ljubljana or the trains from Vienna to Villach, the Semmering starts around Wiener Neustadt/Gloggnitz and ends around Mürzzuschlag/Bruck an der Mur.

The direct train from Vienna to Ljubljana is an EC (EuroCity) train on which reservations are highly recommended as a supplement to a rail pass.

Trains from Vienna to Villach are Railjet trains. Reservations are also highly recommended on these trains, as well as on trains from Villach to Ljubljana.

For travel with a rail pass, it is generally the case that you would purchase reservations by clicking the 'Seat Reservations' tab on our homepage (www.raileurope.com), entering a route, and indicating the type of rail pass with which you'll be traveling (i.e. a 'Eurail Global Pass'). However, passholder reservations for the direct train from Vienna to Ljubljana are currently only able to be booked by calling us. Additionally, only one departure from Vienna to Villach is currently able to be booked on our website (the Railjets from Vienna to Villach depart every couple hours throughout the day). If you'd like to reserve any of the other departures, you would have to call us. Generally, these are trains that work fine on our site, so I'm not sure what the issue is.

We can be reached at 1-800-622-8600. Our current hours are 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM CT Monday to Friday and 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM CT on Saturdays.
