I'll be staying in Gimmelwald & would like to see Jungfrau, Schilthorn, Grindelwald, & Wengen

Hello, my boyfriend and I are coming through Switzerland and staying in Gimmelwald for 4 nights. We don't have an itentiary planned but would like to see Jungfrau, Shilthorn and possibly some surrounding towns like Grindlewald, Wegen and others. Since we will be going up and down the mountain from Gimmelwald, what do you think is the best type of pass for us? And do you have other suggestions for areas to see?

Thank you so much! Very excited to explore this region!

Hi Nyree. Thank you for your question.

The best option for your travels would depend on your entire specific itinerary and various other factors. To cover travel in the immediate area you mentioned, I will say that you might want to consider purchasing a 'Swiss Half Fare Card' at the very least. The 'Swiss Half Fare Card' would enable you to receive a 50% discount on any travels you do in Switzerland, including any of the trains and cable cars in the area.

If you happen to purchase a 'Swiss Travel Pass' to cover other travels around Switzerland, then you would be able to purchase the special 'Swiss Travel Pass Flex with Half Fare Card Combi' option instead of just purchasing the 'Swiss Half Fare Card' by itself. The 'Half Fare Card Combi' option of the 'Swiss Travel Pass', however, is currently not able to be purchased on our website. If you opt to purchase the 'Swiss Travel Pass' and wish to include the 'Half Fare Card Combi' option along with it, then you would call us at 1-800-622-8600.

Otherwise, you would purchase the 'Swiss Half Fare Card' at the full fare on our website, which would be found here: http://www.raileurope.com/activities/swiss-half-fare-card/index.html.

For your trek to Jungfraujoch, you would purchase the 'Jungfraujoch Top of Europe' mountaintop excursion. If you purchase the 'Swiss Travel Pass Flex with Half Fare Card Combi', you would choose the 'Grindelwald or Wengen for Swiss Half Fare Card Combi Holder' option of the 'Jungfraujoch Top of Europe' pass. If you purchase the 'Swiss Half Fare Card' by itself, you would choose the '1 Day Round-Trip Journey from Grindelwald or Wengen - For Use Only With Swiss Half Fare Card' option of the 'Jungfraujoch Top of Europe' pass.  You would purchase the 'Jungfraujoch Top of Europe' here: http://www.raileurope.com/activities/jungfraujoch/index.html.

From Gimmelwald, you can go to Lauterbrunnen to begin the excursion up to Jungfraujoch. Wengen is located on the route from Lauterbrunnen up to Jungfraujoch. The 'Jungfraujoch Top of Europe' would cover you for the segment from Wengen to Jungfraujoch. Grindelwald is located on a different route up to Jungfraujoch than Lauterbrunnen/Wengen. Therefore, if you ascend via Lauterbrunnen/Wengen, you might want to descend via Grindelwald.  With the 'Jungfraujoch Top of Europe', the trip between Wengen or Grindelwald and Jungfraujoch would just have to be completed within a 24 hour time period once you begin the journey.

To get to Lauterbrunnen from Gimmelwald, you would first take a cable car to Stechelberg, where you would board a bus that will take you to Lauterbrunnen. The 'Half Fare Card Combi' option of the 'Swiss Travel Pass' and the 'Swiss Half Fare Card' by itself would both enable you to receive a 50% discount on the cable car between Gimmelwald and Stechelberg. The 'Swiss Travel Pass' covers the bus between Stechelberg and Lauterbrunnen. If you purchase the 'Swiss Half Fare Card' by itself, you would be able to receive a 50% discount on this bus.

A trip up to Mt. Schilthorn from Gimmelwald would first involve taking a cable car from Gimmelwald to Mürren. To be covered between Mürren and Schilthorn, you would purchase the 'Schilthorn/Piz Gloria' mountaintop excursion. If you purchase the 'Swiss Travel Pass Flex with Half Fare Card Combi', you would choose the 'Murren-Schilthorn for Swiss Travel Pass Holder' option of the 'Schilthorn/Piz Gloria' pass. If you purchase the 'Swiss Half Fare Card' by itself, you would choose the '1 Day Round-Trip Journey from Murren - For Use Only With Swiss Half Fare Card' option of the 'Schilthorn/Piz Gloria' pass. You would purchase the 'Schilthorn/Piz Gloria' here: http://www.raileurope.com/activities/schilthorn-piz-gloria/index.html.

The 'Swiss Travel Pass Flex With Half Fare Card Combi' and the 'Swiss Half Fare Card' by itself would both enable you to receive 50% off the cable car between Gimmelwald and Mürren.
