I have been trying to look up rail options (times and prices) from Tirano to Milan for May 13 and 14 with no luck. The page is not appearing. Please advise. Thanks! Do I need a reservation? Is it possible to make one?

    Hello,

From Tirano to Milan, there are direct regional trains that do not accept reservations. Generally, you can check ticket costs and schedules under 'Check Fares and Schedules' on the homepage of our website; however, the requested route is not able to be viewed or booked there at this time. Therefore, to inquire about costs and schedules for this route, you would call us at 1-800-622-8600.

Since these trains do not accept reservations, the ticket we issue to you is all you would need to board, and there would be open seating.

  • Thanks you, Jeff, for this reply. I, too, will be traveling from Tirano to Milan on 14 May following a scenic ride from Chur, Switzerland on the Bernina Express. So, this information is quite helpful. Can you elaborate...

Is the platform far from where the Swiss system (Bernina Express) drops?
I understand there are no reservations. Does this route often sell out?
And is this route via rail or bus?

    Thanks,
    Tracy

    Hi Trajor,

I'm sorry, however, we do not have any information regarding the platforms trains arrive into or depart from. The platform a train arrives into or departs from isn't necessarily fixed and can be determined last minute. You can find your train locally at the station by viewing the board showing the departures.

The trains from Tirano to Milan are regional trains that do not sell out. Since the trains from Tirano to Milan don't accept reservations, the ticket we issue all you would need to board; however, the tickets for this route are only able to be purchased by calling us at 1-800-622-8600.

  • Hi,
If you have a rail pass with Switzerland and Italy as two of your select countries, do you need to purchase a ticket for Tirano to Milan?

    Hi Jillanne,

There is no rail pass that would cover the direct trains from Tirano to Milan. There was previously some conflicting information regarding the trains on this route; however, we have now verified that the trains between Tirano and Milan are not covered by any rail pass and we are not even able to issue regular point-to-point tickets for this trip.

These trains are privately owned and operated by a company called 'TreNord'. We knew that some of the TreNord trains can be covered with a rail pass, but initially we thought that this included the Tirano-Milan route; which is not the case. You would have to purchase tickets for a train from Tirano to Milan locally upon arrival. I want to apologize for any misinformation above.

TreNord trains are only found on certain routes in the very north part of Italy in the area surrounding Milan.

  • Thanks for that information. I also want to travel from Vienna to Venice, not through Innsbruck as I will be going from Verona through Innsbruck on my way to Vienna. Is there a train , other than a night train along the southern part of Austria?

      HI Jillanne,

A connection from Lausanne to Zermatt involves changing trains once in Visp along the way. The vast majority of trains in Switzerland don't accept reservations, including the trains that comprise of this connection from Lausanne to Zermatt. A rail pass that includes Switzerland is all you would need to board the train from Lausanne to Visp, and there would be open seating on this train.

It is important to note that Visp to Zermatt is on a private rail line that is only able to be covered by the Swiss Pass. If you'll instead be traveling with a multiple country pass that includes Switzerland, then you would also have to purchase an additional ticket called the 'Glacier Express Eurail Passholder Fare'. More specifically, you would purchase the 'Visp-Zermatt' option of the Glacier Express Eurail Passholder Fare. You can purchase this additional ticket by clicking here: http://www.raileurope.com/activities/....

The 'Visp-Zermatt' option of the Glacier Express Eurail Passholder ticket is then all you would need to board the connecting train from Visp to Zermatt. Once again, there would be open seating on this train.

      Update:

Starting in 2017, a Eurail Select Pass that includes Switzerland will begin covering ticket costs for the stretch of railway on the Glacier Express line between Visp and Zermatt. Therefore, the 'Glacier Express Eurail Passholder Fare' ticket would no longer be necessary to cover this segment.

Seat reservations would still be necessary for the actual Glacier Express train going the full route from St Moritz to Zermatt (to go along with a Eurail Select Pass).

  • On 5 may 2015 my wife and I would be travelling on the Bernina Express scenic train from St Moritz to Tirano. the train is scheduled to arrive at Tirano at 1:00pm. Directly after that we wish to travel from Tirano to Milan on the regional train, which departs at 1:10 pm. Can this be done? I mean with only ten minutes between the two trains?
    • Jeff (Official Rep) April 13, 2015 15:50
      Thank you for your question.

Rest assured, a 10 minute connection time will be sufficient for you to change trains at the station in Tirano. A common minimum connection time is 7 to 10 minutes for changing trains at the typical station in Europe.

You would purchase tickets and check schedules for the Bernina Express from St Moritz to Tirano by clicking on 'Find Fares & Schedules' on our homepage and entering the route.

In contrast, tickets for trains from Tirano to Milan are currently not able to be purchased on our website. To purchase tickets for your train from Tirano to Milan, you would have to call us at 1-800-622-8600.

  • Hi,
We are taking Bernina Express and reaching Tirano at 12.45pm on July 1, 2018. We want to go to Venice from Tirano. The online search is showing a schedule of trains till June 09, 2018. I am not finding any other connections from Tirano. Could you kindly help me as
    1. where can we find the required information
    2. where can I buy the tickets in advance?
    3. when is the best train I can catch to leave to my destination.

    regards,
    Anitha

      Hi Anitha,

Connections from Tirano to Venice take about 5.5 hours in duration and involve changing trains once in Milan along the way.

However, trains from Tirano to Milan are regional trains that are not yet available to be booked for dates beyond June 9th. For dates after June 9th, we hope the Tirano-Milan trains open up to book at some point within the next couple weeks.

Tickets from Milan to Venice are currently able to be booked on our website for dates in July. From Milan to Venice, there are Frecciarossa high-speed trains or Italo high-speed trains. Frecciarossa and Italo trains can generally be booked 120 days in advance of a departure.

You would purchase tickets by searching a route under 'Tickets & Reservations' on the homepage of our website, www.raileurope.com. When the Tirano-Milan trains open up, you'll be able to one search for the full route from Tirano to Venice. Otherwise, you can break up your search in Milan by doing one search from Tirano to Milan and then another search for connecting trains from Milan to Venice.

At the Milan Centrale station, we recommend allowing yourself 15-20 minutes to change trains. Trains from Tirano arrive into the Centrale station in Milan, so you would want to be sure to choose a train from Milan to Venice that departs from that station as well.

  • Hi..

As reading through this thread, looks like train from Tirano to Milano Centrale did not cover in Eurail pass globa, is it still right for now? If that is the case, we have to purcahse the ticket for it seperately online or at the train station, correct?

and wonder how about the train from Milano Centrale to Venezia Mestre? is that FR or RE train to Venezia Mestre from Milano cover in Eurail pass or not?

One more is that NJ Night train from Venezia Mestre to Vienna route cover in Eurail pass or not? Because I tried to book that night train seat reservation at Eurail reservation self-service page, just showing me the timing but cannot choose to add to cart. Why it could be?
