To Eurail pass or Not to Eurail pass, that is the question. Checking train from Amsterdam to Paris with either a Eurail 3 country Pass or without a rail pass.

I am trying to compare travel with either a Eurail 3 country or a Swiss Pass or travel without. It seems the tickets with a Eurail pass are MORE expensive. Amsterdam to Paris w/out is $82 or w/ Eurail pass is $87. Has anyone else discovered this?

    Hi Caroline,

If the actual 'passholder' rate is available on a Thalys train (Amsterdam to Paris), it should be lower than of the other rates.

To be eligible for the 'passholder' rate on a Thalys from Amsterdam to Paris, the Eurail Select Pass would need to include either France or the Benelux.

The Swiss Travel Pass would not even be valid on a train between Amsterdam to Paris.

For travel with a valid Eurail Select Pass, you would check the reservation costs for a train from Amsterdam to Paris by clicking the 'Seat Reservations' tab on our homepage (, entering the route, and indicating the type of rail pass with which you'll be traveling.

To verify that our website is quoting you the 'passholder' rate, you would click the 'View' button for the cost. After clicking 'View', a box will expand out underneath. In this box, you would refer to the option(s) under where it says 'Ticket Flexibility' and click 'Read More'. When you click 'Read More', the name of the fare should display as something like 'Thalys Passholder 1'.

If you're still finding other rates to be lower than the passholder rate, I would recommend that you call us to verify. We can be reached at 1-800-622-8600. Our current hours are 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM CT Monday to Friday and 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM CT on Saturdays.
