Train Passes

If I take a train from Copenhagen to Berlin one day and 5 days later, leave Berlin to take a train to Vienna. Will my traveling in Germany be considered one day or two days?

    Hi Bo,

The travel you described would use up 2 days of rail travel on a flexipass, unless you'll be taking the direct overnight train for your trip from Copenhagen to Berlin, in which case 3 days of rail travel would be used up on a flexipass, due to the '7pm rule' I describe below.

A flexipass allows for a set number of travel days, which must be completed within a time frame of 1 or 2 months.

'Travel days' on a flexipass refer to how many separate days you plan on using your rail pass. A rail day is a 24-hour period from midnight to midnight. You may take as many trains as you wish during the 24 hour time frame and still only use one day of travel on a pass. For instance, if you were take a day train from 'city A' to 'city B' and then take a connecting train to 'city C' on the same day, then you would only use up one day of travel on your rail pass. In contrast, if you were to take that connecting train to 'city C' on the next day, then you would use up 2 days of rail travel on your pass.

With a multiple country rail pass, the number of travel days you choose can be divided between the countries however you wish. The travel days would not be counted "by country", but instead for all countries collectively. The countries included on a particular multiple country rail pass can just be thought of as one geographical area you can travel within for the purpose of the pass.

One important rule to remember is that if you happen to take a night train that departs prior to 7 pm to arrive into the destination the next morning, then 2 days of rail travel will be used up on a rail pass. Most night trains; however, do depart after 7 pm, in which case only 1 day of rail travel would be used up on a rail pass. The overnight train from Copenhagen to Berlin departs before 7pm, so it would be subject to this '7pm rule' on flexipasses.
