Travel from Basel to Zermatt using Eurail Global Pass

I am looking to best options for tickets/pass from Basel to Zermatt using the Global Eurail Pass. When I attempt to make reservations, I get a message that portions of my travel are not covered using the pass and to click on a link to see the discounted price. When I click on the link, it takes me to the Glacier train page. We will be in Switzerland, France, Germany, and Amsterdam for a total of 8 days but only need 5 days of train access. How do I book the Basel-Zermatt round trip using the Global PassThank you

    Hi Peggy,

A connection from Basel to Zermatt takes just under 3.5 hours in duration and involves changing trains once in Visp along the way. Trains from Visp to Zermatt run along a stretch of the Glacier Express route.

As of just this year, the segment of the Glacier Express route between Visp and Zermatt is covered by the Eurail Global Pass.

Rest assured, reservations are not at all necessary for the trains from Basel to Visp and Visp to Zermatt. The Eurail Global Pass is all you'll need to board.

You can view schedules from Basel to Zermatt by doing a search for the route on our homepage, www.raileurope.com.

  • Thanks Jeff for your answer here, that's on-point to a slightly similar question I have regarding this route. I an planning on making the reverse trip, from Zermatt to Basel through Visp with a Eurail Select Pass (covering Switzerland). Would that also be covered by my pass?

      Hi Graf,

Yes, the trains from Zermatt to Visp and Visp to Basel are covered by any rail pass that includes Switzerland. Trains from Zermatt to Visp do not accept reservations, so the Eurail Select Pass is all you would need board. Reservations are not necessary on the trains from Visp to Basel, so the Eurail Select Pass would once again be all you'll need to board.

For planning purposes, you can use the route search feature under 'Book Train Tickets' on our homepage (www.raileurope.com) just to view schedules for these trains.
