Travel from Florence to Croatia

We are traveling from Florence to Rijeka in May 2015. What are the best options for us to travel by train? It doesn't look like it's easy to do.

When trying to get reservations on the RailEurope site, it says we can not make reservations at this time. Is that because specific schedules are not set or is it that you can't make reservations that far in advance.

Thank you for your question, Ken.

It wouldn't be possible to get from Florence to Rijeka within one calendar day. A trip from Florence to Rijeka would require that you stay overnight in Villach along the way. In its entirety, the connection from Florence to Rijeka would involve 3 changes en route; once in Venice, once in Villach, and then once in Ljubljana. You would purchase tickets and check schedules by clicking on 'Find Fares & Schedules' on our homepage. For this trip, you would do one search for trains from Florence to Venice (high-speed Frecciargento, high-speed Italo trains, and regular InterCity trains), another search for the segment from Venice to Villach (which would be by bus or train), and then another search for the part of the connection from Villach to Rijeka the following day.

When doing your searches, it may be the case that only the Santa Lucia station displays as the station of arrival for trains from Florence and only the Mestre station displays as the station of departure for the train and bus to Villach. However, you can rest assured that the Frecciargento and Italo trains from Florence to Venice do also stop at the Mestre station, and the train from Venice to Villach does stop at the Santa Lucia station. Both the Frecciargento and Italo trains from Florence to Venice stop at the Mestre station just 12 minutes before they are shown to be arriving into the Santa Lucia on our site. The train from Venice to Villach departs from the Santa Lucia station 12 minutes before it is shown to be departing from the Mestre station on our site. Therefore, you would be able to make your change at either station in Venice.

Generally, the trains that comprise of this connection (including the bus from Venice to Villach) can only be booked within 90 days of an intended date of departure. Since your intended travel happens to fall outside of this time frame, you would just enter an earlier date, some time within the next 90 days, to get an idea of the ticket costs and view schedules when searching the rout on our site. The Italo trains from Florence to Venice, however, can be booked up to 120 in advance of a departure.
