Zurich to Jungfrau region (Lauterbrunnen, then Murren, then Wengen) and then back to Zurich

My husband and I want to travel from zurich to lauterbrunnen (in february) on thursday then to murren friday, to wengen saturday and back to zurich monday. We want to ski the jungfrau region during our stay and travel to the shilthorn and possibly jungfraujoch as well. What makes the most sense for our trip? I've looked into a swiss travel pass or a rail and snow package or just buying individual train tickets and ski passes. thanks!

Thank you for your question, Lindsay.

Instead of purchasing the Swiss Travel Pass, the best option for an itinerary like the one you described would be to purchase the 'Swiss Transfer Ticket' with 'Half Fare Card Combi'. The Swiss Transfer Ticket would cover your round-trip between Zurich and Lauterbrunnen, and the 'Half Fare Card Combi' would then enable you to receive half price on any of the trips you do in the Jungfraujoch/Schilthorn region while you're there. Currently, the 'Half Fare Card Combi' version of the Swiss Transfer Ticket is not available to be purchased on our website. Instead, you would purchase this by calling us at 1-800-622-8600.

When you're in Lauterbrunnen, you would show the 'Half Fare Card Combi' in order to receive a half-off a ticket from there to Mürren (the ride from Lauterbrunnen to Mürren is a short one as it is, taking only 20 minutes).

You would then purchase the 'Mürren-Schilthorn for Swiss Half Card Combi Holder' option of the 'Schilthorn/Piz Gloria' mountaintop excursion on our site. This specific option of the 'Schilthorn/Piz Gloria' mountaintop excursion would account for your half-price discount on cable car between Mürren and Schilthorn. You can purchase this here: http://www.raileurope.com/activities/schilthorn-piz-gloria/index.html.

When you're in Mürren, you would once again show your 'Half Fare Card Combi' in order to receive half-price tickets for a connection from there to Wengen. The ride from Mürren to Wengen only takes about 45 minutes in duration and just involves changing trains once in Lauterbrunnen along the way.

From Wengen, you would make the trek up to the peak of Jungfraujoch. For this trip, you would purchase the 'Grindelwald or Wengen for Swiss Half Fare Card Combi Holder' option of the 'Jungfraujoch Top of Europe' mountaintop excursion. This specific option of the 'Jungfraujoch Top of Europe' mountaintop excursion would account for your half-price discount on the cogwheel railway from Wengen to Kleine Scheidegg and then the famous Jungfrau railway from there up to the peak of Jungfraujoch (as well as a return from Jungfraujoch back to Wengen done within 24 hours). You can purchase this here: http://www.raileurope.com/activities/jungfraujoch/index.html.

You would then show the Swiss Transfer Ticket to cover you from Wengen back to Zurich. For reference, you can just check schedules for connections from Zurich to Lauterbrunnen and then Wengen back to Zurich by clicking on 'Find Fares & Schedules' on our homepage and entering the routes. For the return from Wengen back to Zurich, you would just have to break up your search once in Bern. Therefore, you would do one search for the segment of this connection from Wengen to Bern and then another search for connecting trains from Bern to Zurich. Since the Swiss Transfer Ticket is all you need to cover the connection from Zurich to Lauterbrunnen and Wengen back to Zurich, you would not have to purchase any tickets for these legs. All you would do is show your Swiss Transfer Ticket to board these trains.

  • Would the Jungfrau Travel Pass be the best option for someone who will be staying in Wengen 4 days? Interested in doing all of the activities you mentioned earlier in the thread. The only other travel would be to/from Zurich Airport to Wengen.

Also, when I checked out the point-2-point ticket cost on SBB, it was quite a bit less than the Swiss Transfer Ticket - am I missing something (i.e., fees, hassle-factor)?
