Travel by train from Strasbourg to Malmedy in Belgium

We want to travel from Strasbourg to Malmedy, Belgium (near the Circuit de Spa Francorchamps track & closest major city is Spa). Does a train go from Strasbourg to Spa? I'm not find one on this site.

    Hi Michelle,

The closest rail station to Malmedy would be the one in Geronstere. Geronstere is accessed by regional trains coming from Pepinster. It is the next stop after Spa on these trains from Pepinster. The trains from Pepinster arrive into Geronstere just 5 minutes after arriving into Spa.

A connection from Strasbourg to Geronstere would take at least 6.5 hours in duration and involves 4 train changes along the way in any of the following combinations of cities:

1.) Luxembourg, Namur, Liege and Pepinster
2.) Karlsruhe, Cologne, Aachen and Pepinster
3.) Offenburg, Cologne, Aachen and Pepinster

However, tickets for trains from Pepinster to Spa/Geronstere are not able to be purchased from anywhere outside of Europe. You would just purchase the tickets for this final portion of the connection locally upon arrival. As such, schedules from Pepinster to Spa or Geronstere are not able to be viewed on our website, but the trains depart once every hour and take just over 20 minutes in duration.

You can check ticket costs and schedules for the rest of the connection under 'Check Fares and Schedules' on the homepage of our website, www.raileurope.com. You would just piece together your search by doing a separate search for each segment of the respective connections.

If you do the first connection (via Luxembourg, Namur, Liege, and Pepinster), tickets for the portion of the route from Liege to Pepister would also only be able to be purchased locally. In this case, for planning purposes, you can still view schedules for trains from Liege to Pepinster by doing a search for trains from Liege to Verviers (Pepinster would not be recognized on our website) under 'Check Fares and Schedules' on the homepage of our website and clicking the option to 'Check Schedules'. The trains from Liege to Verviers stop in Pepinster 5 minutes before they arrive into Verviers. To purchase tickets for the remaining segments of this connection, you would clicke 'Check Fares' after entering each set of city-pairs under 'Check Fares and Schedules'.

If you do either of the final two connections from Strasbourg to Spa/Geronstere mentioned above, you can purchase tickets for the portion from Aachen to Pepinster by doing a search on our website for trains from Aachen to Liege. The trains from Aachen to Liege arrive into Pepinster 16 minutes before they arrive into Liege. Therefore, the tickets we would issue you for this portion of the connection would display Liege as the destination station, but you would just get off the train when it makes its stop in Pepinster. Also, please note that only the regional trains from Aachen to Liege will stop in Pepinster. You can identify the regional trains for this route on our website by their train number. The regional trains on this route will have a 4 digit train number that begins with a '5'. Therefore, you would want to choose one of these trains when you purchase the tickets. Once again, the tickets for the connecting trains from Pepinster to Spa or Geronstere would be purchased locally upon arrival.

Trains in this part of Europe can be booked within 90 days of an intended date of departure.

From Spa or Geronstere, you would take some form of public transportation to continue on to Malmedy.

Thanks so much Jeff! This really helps clear up some our travel. We may end up just renting a car, but I'm glad to know we have some train routes available.
