Traveling from Paris to Brittany American Cemetery (near Pontorson) and back to Paris in one day?

Is it possible to travel from Paris to Brittany American Cemetery and back to Paris in one day by rail? (Cemetery near St James, Pontorson-Mont-St-Michel.

I understand that I would use a taxi for the last leg of trip, Pontorson to Cemetery, around 20 minutes taxi ride.

Any input is appreciated. Thanks

    Hi Tom,

The Brittany American Cemetery is in Saint-James. The closest station to Saint-James is Pontorson, about 10 miles away. Connections from Paris to Pontorson take at least 3.5 to 4 hours in duration and involve changing trains once in Rennes along the way. The issue is that the connecting trains from Rennes to Pontorson are too infrequent, and the trains do not sync up in a way that would make this possible as day-trip, if you'll be starting in Paris.

It looks to me that your plan to do this as day-trip from Paris would only be possible if there are buses that go to the cemetery leaving from Rennes. Rennes is about 40 miles from the cemetery, but the trains from Paris to Rennes are frequent enough and short enough that it should make this possible. It is just contingent on there being bus service from Rennes, and bus service that is frequent enough at that.

High-speed TGV trains between Paris and Rennes depart hourly throughout the day, and the ride one-way only takes about 1.5 hours.

Pontorson is a short enough distance away from the cemetery that you would probably just be able to take a taxi -- the problem is just the infrequency of those trains from Rennes to Pontorson. Therefore, I'd recommend seeing if there are buses from Rennes to the cemetery.

I do know there are buses that go to Mont St Michel from the station in Rennes, so perhaps there are also buses to Saint-James.

You would purchase tickets from Paris to Rennes by searching the route under 'Book Train Tickets' on the homepage of our website, www.raileurope.com. You would do the same for tickets from Paris to Pontorson (via Rennes).
