    Hi Steven,

What to purchase for a trip would depend on the specifics of the itinerary itself and various other factors.

Unlike other countries, Spain has 2 different individual country rail passes to choose from: the Renfe Spain Pass and the Eurail Spain Pass.

The Renfe Spain Pass is distinguishable from other passes in that it would be purchased for 'segments', as opposed to 'travel days'. A 'segment' refers to each individual train you take (i.e. '4 Segments in 1 Month'=4 different trains in 1 month).

Therefore, a round-trip (using direct trains in each direction) would constitute 2 'segments' on a Renfe Spain Pass, regardless of the day you make the return trip. In contrast, a round-trip done on the same day would constitute 1 'travel day' on a Eurail Spain Pass or any multiple country 'Eurail Pass' that includes Spain.

The general rules is that the Renfe Spain Pass would the more economical option when the number of travel 'segments' equals the number of travel days. When the number of travel 'segments' exceeds the number of travel days, you would want to start looking at the Eurail Spain Pass, because it may end up being the less expensive option.

The Renfe Spain Pass is also unique from other passes in that it is issued electronically (most other passes can only be issued as physical documents that would have to be shipped to you) and that reservation costs are included in the cost of the pass itself (with regard to other rail passes, reservations are an additional cost).

  • Hi, Jeff
I'm from Malaysia and I would like to know , if I purchase the eurail pass , I need to wait the pass to be physically sent to me or is an e- pass. Furthermore, everyone is mentioning that we need to make online reservation for the seat ( with fees) but I would like to know, can I make the reservation directly at the train station when I reach Spain? Do I still have to pay the reservation fees even though I make the reservation at the station? Example from Barcelona-Madrid the Renfe AVE fees is Euro10.
