  • Hi Rich,

Trains from Chamonix to Vallorcine do not accept reservations, so the Eurail Global Pass is all you would need to board.

Trains from Vallorcine to Martigny do not accept reservations, so the Eurail Global Pass is all you would need to board.

Together, the trains from Chamonix to Vallorcine and Vallorcine to Martigny make up the scenic Mont Blanc Express route.

Trains from Martigny to Montreux also do not accept reservations, so the Eurail Global Pass is all you would need to board.

The GoldenPass scenic route runs from Montreux to Lucerne and involves changing trains in Zweisimmen and Interlaken along the way. Reservations for the GoldenPass are able to be booked on our website.

Of the trains comprising of the GoldenPass route, reservations would only be recommended on the segment from Montreux to Zweisimmen. For travel with a rail pass, you would purchase reservations for a train from Montreux to Zweisimmen by clicking the 'Seat Reservations' tab on our homepage (www.raileurope.com), entering the cities, and indicating the type of rail pass with which you'll be traveling (i.e. the 'Eurail Global Pass').

On the other segments of the GoldenPass route (Zweisimmen to Interlaken and Interlaken to Lucerne), reservations are possible but not necessary. If you also would like to have reservations for these segments, you would just have to piece together the connection by doing a separate search for each segment. Therefore, you would do one search for trains from Montreux to Zweisimmen, another search for connecting trains from Zweisimmen to Interlaken, and then another search for connecting trains from Interlaken to Lucerne.

On the segment from Montreux to Zweisimmen, you'll have the option of either ‘Classic’ GoldenPass trains or ‘Panorama’ GoldenPass trains. These will be labeled accordingly when you pull up the results of this search. Carriages on the 'Classic' trains have a vintage turn-of-the-century Belle Époque look, whereas the 'Panorama' train carriages have a more modern look. 'Classic' GoldenPass trains also have 'wine cellar coaches', which offer a wider selection of wine than would be offered in the bar cars on the 'Panorama' trains; however, food is available for purchase on both the 'Classic' and 'Panorama' trains. The Classic trains have large windows, but the windows on the Panorama trains are, of course, more “panoramic”.

On the segment from Interlaken to Lucerne, all trains have panoramic windows for taking in all the surrounding scenery.

Generally, trains on the GoldenPass route can be reserved once within 90 days of an intended departure date.

    • Definitely! Combining the Mont Blanc Express and GoldenPass should make for an incredible journey.
    • Right. I'll check to make sure it's the Golden Pass before jumping aboard.
