What if my flight is delayed & I miss my Renfe train from Madrid to Malaga?

I arrive at the Madrid airport at 8:35 am and want to take the train to Malaga at 11:35 am. I'll go from the airport to the train station in Madrid. If I buy my train ticket ahead, what happens if the flight is late arriving and I miss my train -- can I take a later one? It seems even the expensive exchange plan only works if you exchange it the day ahead. I'm only going round trip Madrid-Malaga, so I don't need a rail pass.

    Hi Jeanne,

Madrid Barajas Airport only services trains to the city of Madrid. Trains to Malaga depart out of the Atocha station in the city proper. From the Madrid Barajas Airport, you would take Line C-1 of the local 'Cercanías' rail network to the Atocha Cercanías station. Atocha Cercanías is adjacent to Atocha, from where your train to Malaga will depart. The Cercanías trains depart once every 30 minutes throughout the day and the ride from the airport to Atocha Cercanías takes about 26 minutes in duration. You would pay to board the Cercanías trains locally upon arrival.

You would purchase tickets from Madrid to Malaga by searching the route under 'Find Train Tickets' on the homepage of our website, www.raileurope.com.

Exchange and refund possibilities are always dependent on the fare/ticket; however, tickets for trains in Spain are actually non-exchangeable. Therefore, if you miss your train, you would not be able to take a later one.

When you pull up the results of your route search, you would find the exchange and refund policies by clicking the 'View' button under the cost for a particular fare. After you click 'View', a box will expand out underneath where the exchange and refund policies for that fare will be stated.

Trains from Madrid to Malaga are AVE high-speed trains. Generally, trains in Spain can be booked once within 90 days of an intended departure date.

  • This was so helpful. I'll rent a car in Malaga, which it seems I can only do from the airport, so I'll have to get to the airport from the train station in the afternoon. Then I will use the bus and subway in Madrid the week after.
It really depends upon how accurate the arrival times are of flights from JFK to Madrid!
    Thanks.
