Do day trains still have seat compartments for 6 passengers? What are the First class accomodations like in general?

I last used a Eurail pass in 1988. Many of the trains had "private" compartments with 6 seats in them (Like in the harry Potter movies) Are the accomodations the same or is the design of the cars different now with whole cabins instead of compartments?

    Hi Robert,

This is a question I've often wondered myself, as it is true that these kinds of compartments are what you see in many movies. However, it is not as common as it once was (at least when considering Europe as a whole) that coaches on day trains would be made up of enclosed 6 passenger seating compartments. Also, there is no set way to tell what trains will carry such compartments, unless you can recall first-hand experience with a specific train.

Coaches with enclosed 6 passenger seating compartments could actually be considered the norm on day trains in Central and Eastern Europe, but they would be nearly non-existent on trains in Western Europe. On trains in Western Europe, you would expect to see trains with open train cars. The one exception I can think of would be many 'InterCity' trains in Italy, which do still have coaches with the enclosed 6 passenger seat compartments. There may be some trains in the United Kingdom that would carry such compartments as well.

On trains in Europe, 1st class offers more comfortable and larger seats, more leg room, and is sometimes less crowded with fewer seats per train car. First class train cars also may tend to be quieter than the 2nd class train cars.

If a particular day train does carry the enclosed compartments you were referring to in your question, it would carry them in both their 1st and 2nd class coaches.
