When is a Pass not a Pass?

I have a Eurail Global Pass and want to reserve seats on a train from Rome to Milan but note that there is a charge for this. I thought buying a Global Pass was for this purpose?

    Hi Dennis,

The objective of a rail pass is to cover the ticket costs on trains. When applicable, reservations are a supplementary cost to a rail pass. If you were to purchase regular point-to-point tickets (instead of a rail pass), the value of any necessary reservations would still be considered/embedded into those costs. Therefore, a rail pass can still work out to be the most economical option for travelers taking multiple trains while in Europe. It depends on the itinerary.

Reservations are required on most high-speed trains, many international routes, and all overnight trains. In Italy, most major cities are connected almost exclusively by high-speed trains. Therefore, it is often the case that reservations are required when traveling there. Trains from Rome to Milan are Frecciarossa high-speed trains, which do require reservations.

For travel with a rail pass, you would purchase reservations by searching a route on our homepage (www.raileurope.com), checking the box that says ‘I have a rail pass’, and then indicating the type of rail pass with which you'll be traveling (i.e. a ‘Eurail Global Pass’).

Generally, trains in Italy can be reserved within 120 days of an intended departure date.

  • I did begin booking a train the way you outline but when I saw that there was a cost involved (about $23 per person) I hesitated in continuing. My misunderstanding seems to be in grasping that there is an additional charge for reserving seats on some trains. Thank you.

  • I was chatting with a RailEurope rep on 3/29/2019 about securing two 1st class seat reservations on an InterCity train between Roma Termini and Scalea on 12 May; we have two Eurail Global Passes. The rep found the same train and $7 price for two seniors on the website, the same as I had on my end. He indicated that before I checked out, the system would assign the two seats and that I would know the seat information. However, in going through the process as described, I was asked to provide my payment/credit card information, but no where was I provided with seat assignment information. I want to be certain that I have two 1st class seats assigned to me. Any info or help would be appreciate.
