  • Hi Jason,

On the direct train from Paris to Munich, reservations are required.

Other connections from Paris to Munich involve changing trains once in either Stuttgart or Mannheim along the way. The trains from Paris to Stuttgart and Paris to Mannheim are France-Germany High Speed (TGV Est) trains on which reservations would be required.

Trains from Stuttgart to Munich and Mannheim to Munich are high-speed ICE (InterCity Express) trains on which reservations would be highly recommended but not required.

I'm sorry, but I don't show there to be an ICE (InterCity Express) currently running overnight from Munich to Berlin.

Day trains from Munich to Berlin and Berlin to Essen are ICE (InterCity Express) on which reservations would be highly recommended but not required.

When you pull up the results of a 'passholder' reservation search on our website, each departure that displays should come attached with a message that says either 'Reservation Required', 'Reservation Recommended', or 'Non Reservable'.

For travel with a rail pass, you would search for any passholder reservations by clicking the 'Seat Reservations' tab on our homepage (www.raileurope.com), entering a route, and indicating the type of rail pass with which you'll be traveling.

For some ICE (InterCity Express) trains, our website may say that reservations are required; however, that is not correct. Rest assured, reservations are only recommended on ICE (InterCity Express) trains.
