    Hi Harry.

There is major construction on the rail line between Antequera and Granada (on the way from Madrid to Granada) until at least early July. Until then, travelers would take the train as far as Antequera, where the Spanish national rail network is providing bus service for those continuing on to Granada. The trains from Madrid to Antequera are high-speed AVE or Altaria trains.

You would purchase tickets and check schedules for trains from Madrid to Antequera by clicking on 'Find Fares & Schedules' on our homepage. For Antequera to be recognized by our website, you would have to type it as 'Antequera Sta.ANA', like so:

Generally, trains in Spain can only be booked once within 60 to 90 days of an intended date of departure.

Rest assured, the buses to Granada are scheduled specifically to connect from the trains arriving in from Madrid. Therefore, you would have about 10 to 20 minutes between your train's arrival into Antequera and the next bus to Granada.

Yes, but we are now able to issue tickets for the bus from Antequera to Granada. For a trip from Madrid to Granada, you would just piece together the connection by doing a separate search for each segment. Therefore, you would do one search from 'Madrid' to 'Antequera Sta.ANA' and then another search from 'Antequera Sta.ANA' to Granada.

  • To book the reverse - Granada to Madrid - how can I book? Are there still buses between Granada and Antequera to connect with the AVE trains?

    • Will direct train from Seville to Granada be running on 27 of September? Is. There any works between Seville and Granada aswell?

      Hi Helen,

The rail into Granada from Seville is the same as the one from Madrid, and the construction I describe above will still be going on in late September. However, I mentioned above that they had begun running regional trains for the segment between Antequera and Granada, which is actually not the case. You would still have to take a bus to get from Antequera to Granada. Rest assured, tickets purchased from our website for the segment from Antequera to Granada are valid for the buses.

You would purchase tickets by entering a route under 'Find Train Tickets' on our homepage, www.raileurope.com. For the route from Seville to Granada, you would have to piece together the connection by doing a separate search for each segment. Additionally, when entering your search, you would have to type Antequera as 'Antequera Sta.Ana'. Therefore, you would do one search for trains from 'Seville' to 'Antequera Sta.Ana' and another search for the segment from 'Antequera Sta.Ana' to Granada.

If you're prompted to enter a station after you type Seville, you would choose 'Sevilla Santa Justa' from the drop-down menu that appears.

Trains from Seville to Antequera ('Antequera Sta.Ana') are Avant trains or MD (Media Distancia) trains.

  • Just to confirm. We'd be traveling from Madrid to Granada on July 1st, 2016. Each of us would need to purchase 2 tickets.

The first ticket would be from "Madrid, Spain (MAD)" departing at 11:35am to "Antequera Sta.Ana, Spain" arriving at 1:52pm.

The second ticket would be from "Antequera Sta.Ana, Spain" departing at 2:40pm to "Granada" arriving at 4:10pm.

The first ticket would be $93 (economy) per person, and the second would be $14 (economy) per person.

    Is this right?

      Hi Alex,

I'm sorry, we are not able to provide or verify prices or schedules through this forum or through email. If you'd like to verify costs and schedules shown on our website, you would have to call us. We can be reached at 1-800-622-8600. Our current hours are 8:00 AM to 7:30 PM CT Monday to Friday and 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM CT on Saturdays.

There is one correction I'd like to make regarding the above information. I had mentioned that they are now running the trains for the segment between Antequera and Granada; however, that is not the case. Instead, there would still be a bus substitution for this segment. Rest assured, the tickets you purchase for the Antequera-Granada segment would still be valid for the buses.

Aside from that, you are correct about what you need to purchase (one set of tickets for the segment from Madrid to 'Antequera Sta.Ana' and another set of tickets for the segment from 'Antequera Sta.Ana' to Granada).

  • My wife and I are traveling from Madrid to Granada at the end of September. We have the leg from Madrid to Antequera-Santa Ana booked but tickets are not available from Antequera-Santa Ana to Granada. How long in advance do those open up? I ask because we are then traveling from Granada to Seville which requires a stop back through Antequera-Santa Ana. Thanks.

      Hi Justin,

Generally, trains in Spain can only be booked within 60 to 90 days of an intended date of departure. As it is currently, the national rail network of Spain has not yet opened up ticket purchases for the Antequera-Granada buses operating on dates beyond September 18th. We expect the national rail network of Spain to make these tickets available very soon, probably within the next 2 or 3 weeks. Until they do, you can get an idea of the schedules and ticket costs for this route by using a date prior to September 19th.

  • When is the high speed rail line between Granada and Antequera now expected to become operational? Any likelihood it will be open by May, 2018?

    Hello Arnold,

We would not expect this new high speed line to be opened by May of this year. Construction in the area has been going on for several years now, and we have not been notified that they are close to completion. Connecting trains via Antequera are of course available, and can be booked 60 days in advance, but no news yet on any high speed service.
