I’m frustrated

Unable to deliver paper tickets purchased online to Europe

I'm in southern France looking to travel to Riga, Latvia.
I continued to receive an error telling me that it could not recognize the Valence TGV... a major connection in France. So I called and was told that I could not book to EUROPE if it was north of Poland. Funny... I would think RAIL EUROPE = Europe. THEN I was told oh yes, and wherever you go, you have to tell Rail Europe from which major city to which major city. Another funny thing... I don't know the correct or best connections. So if I want to go from Lyon to Hamburg I have to tell Rail Europe which cities I must pass through? Does all this sound as if Rail Europe does almost nothing except book what YOU tell it to? Does it know anything about the rail system, connections or services? Someone please direct me to a service that KNOWS their product. THANKS

  • Hi Connolly,

The reason why you can not always book from Europe is because our operations are based in North America and many train tickets and rail passes we sell must be shipped by mail to our travelers. When you are in Europe, you can book on our website train tickets that are available as print at the station or print at home e-Tickets, because we usually do not mail train tickets to a European address, from the United States.

Thank you for bringing to our attention the fact that you were unable to find routing on our web site for Lyon to Hamburg. I'll follow up with our IT team to make sure this routing is automatically provided in the future.

Thanks for taking the time to tell us about your experience. We're definitely listening and will use your feedback to improve our services.

  • Hi, I also have the same problem when ordering a ticket Hamburg-Berlin from Sweden. Is there now a way to book tickets and and mark Sweden as an origin country or the phone is the better way to do this reservation?

    Hi Christine,

Rail Europe is the North American-based rail ticket consolidator for the various national rail networks of Europe, and most of our tickets and passes are physical documents that would have to be shipped to you, including tickets for trains operating within Germany. If you are already in Europe, you can arrange for the tickets to be shipped to you at an address there. However, delivery to an international address is not able to be arranged on our website. To arrange for the pass to be delivered to you at an address in Europe, you would call us at 1-847-916-1028 or 1-800-622-8600.

If you are a resident of Sweden, then you would place your order from our actual European site at www.raileurope.eu.

  • I am a resident of the US studying in the UK and I am having the same problem. I am trying to book two German Rail Passes but my current address is in London, so it won't let me choose that address to have the tickets sent to me. I have tried calling the 1-847-916-1028 (from UK phone so 1-800 won't work) and at the main menu it says "press 2 for booking and website navigation." I press 2 and the call gets dropped every time. So I can't book the ticket over the phone or over the internet. What should I do?

      Hi Fallon,

If you are already in Spain, then you can just purchase your reservations locally at a nearby station.

Rail Europe is the North American-based ticket supplier for the various national rail networks of Europe, and most of our tickets, reservations and passes are actual physical documents that would have to be shipped to you.

Many countries and various train operators in Europe do not yet offer e-ticketing; however, as of 2008, the transition is slowly being made. We are aware of the demand for such service, and we hope that e-ticketing becomes much more widespread throughout all of Europe within the next few years. Many stations in Europe do not have kiosks to make e-ticketing a possibility and many train companies do not yet accept print-at-home tickets.

Currently, only tickets for trains in certain parts of Europe are able to be issued as e-tickets and/or print-at-home tickets (domestic trains operating within France, some international trains between France and neighboring countries, the United Kingdom, and Spain). Other passes and tickets are actual physical documents that would have to be shipped to you. This includes all rail passes. Passholder reservations on trains in Spain are also only able to be issued as physical documents.

A rail pass covers the ticket costs on trains between different cities in the country or countries included on the pass. When applicable, reservations are a supplementary cost to a rail pass, just as they would be factored into the cost of individual point-to-point tickets. Therefore, a rail pass still often works out to be the most economical option for travelers taking multiple trains while in Europe.

We do recommend purchasing any reservations in advance, prior to departing for Europe.

  • I’m frustrated and confused
How do I book a seat on a train with my Eurorail pass?
I have my Eurorail Global Pass already but would like to book a seat on a train going from Paris to Barcelona. I have found the train I need to take but when I go to reserve a seat online it works fine until the end when it asks for my Canadian address to ship to when I am currently in France. The train I am booking for is only 8 days away so I need it soon. I need to be able to print the reservations but it won't let me! What can I do? Is there anything I can do?
